Employment w/a Criminal RecordFinding post-incarceration employment can be an almost monumental task. Find tips, job offers and stories from those of us that have experienced it first hand.
First time finding a job was tough for me after getting out.I was 23 years old, applied at certain places and no calls back. These were at tire and lube places. Was also a single mom raising a 6 soon to be 7 year old daughter at the time too.Mom saw I was struggling too and was helping me out at times. It was frustrating as well and mom was there comforting me.I about gave up and finally a light at the end of the tunnel.A neighbor two doors from us ran an auto salvage yard, mom talked to him.Knew he was a great guy helping ex criminals out wanting to clean up their life.Came down, said I was welcomed to work for him and saw potential in me reaching my goal.Could not turn it down.First job was a heavy equipment operator moving junked out vehicles around with a front end loader.Taught me very well and still good at it.Then he offered me to pay for my college education going to an automotive school, saw I loved working on cars. After a talk with my mom, went for it.Age 24,started fixing his repairable wrecks doing the mechanical repairs which I still do.I say he turned my life around,he is now retired and his 2 sons are just like him. They help out people like this and I now help out.I give them the advice on staying in the right direction after getting out.

Wish we could clone people like that. If more employers saw the good results they might be more willing to take a chance on someone who needs a 2nd chance.

Since then I have never been arrested and kept my life in the right direction since he hired me in.Never had a word with a cop on a crime commited too. Most of the cops know I changed my life around and now honest to them.

If you're in Michigan, they have a lot of reentry reform going on. I was on a webinar a while back sponsored by Safe & Just Michigan. https://www.safeandjustmi.org/
They are really a great group & pushing 2nd chances.
