Default Getting pregnant if he has hepatitis C

I am not handling things well right now, and am extremely emotional so I'm sorry if this is a somewhat rambling post.

Ok, my guy obviously has hep c. He's had it for years and I do NOT have it. He takes shots for treatment.

Today he called and told me he has liver cirrhosis due to this disease. :'( He was in the medical unit this morning. He sounded ok when he told me..... I mean, not happy of course but he did not cry. I cried, hysterically. He is still young. I googled some things about cirrhosis and I probably should not have.

Anyway, the point is - we want a baby. I wasn't worried about it before but with this diagnosis I suddenly am overcome with anxiety about his medical condition affecting the future pregnancy. For instance, risk to the baby, could we have a normal sex life during pregnancy, etc. Does anybody know? I'm sure there's lots of people who have gotten pregnant with a hep c positive partner, right?

Thanks, everyone!

I think you should do some research yourself and ask a doctor their opinion on this matter.

It's not likely that you or the baby would acquire hep c...but there's always the possibility that you would and therefore the baby would during pregnancy. My dad had hep c, my mom never got it and obviously neither did I. I would really set up an appt with your ob/gyn and asks those questions. You have to also be aware that many of the treatments can cause birth defects therefore there's a time period after he's off treatment before you should try to conceive.

He also needs to talk to his medical team and see what the likelihood of being cured is. That should be both of your top priority right now. There are so many great treatment options now!

I second what you've just been told. If you have a normal sex life (no blood or violence) then the odds of either you or a baby getting Hep C are low. Not nonexistent, just low. Speak with your doctor!

ps. Cirrhosis of the liver is not contagious in any way shape or form.
Please ask an actual doctor about all of this! Goggling things is just going to freak you out unnecessarily!

If the father has hepatitis C but the mother does not, the baby cannot become infected because a father cannot pass the virus directly to a baby. --- according to a hep c FAQ.. but I suggest that you delay pregnancy first until he gets better..

Its unlikely that you or the baby would get hep c but perhaps talk to a doctor. I'm against googling medical things as it just makes you stress out so have a chat with a professional.

YOU can get hep c from sex, BUT the baby WON'T. I've got hep c and I got it from a hep c + ex.

If the mother has hep c during the pregnancy there's a 1 in 25 chance that she will pass it on to the baby. That's the same statistic vaginal or c section.
