Opened in 1946, the site was used as an internment camp during the last war. Extensive redevelopment has taken place over the last ten years and there is little left of the wartime buildings.
After April 2000 the establishment had only held male prisoners under the age of 18 as part of the Prison Service under 18 estate.
In November 2010 the establishment rerolled as a Category C adult prison. It is currently undergoing a change in function whereby it will solely hold Category C Foreign National Prisoners. The changeover is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2012.

HMYOC HYDEBANK WOOD Prison Regime Info

Hospital Road Belfast BT8 8NA
Phone No.028 9025 3666
Governor / Director Gary Alcock
Category Male YOI
Region Northern Ireland
Operational Capacity 306
Cell Occupancy Single
Listener Scheme Yes
First Night Centre Yes

A medium to low security establishment accommodating male young offenders and all female prisoners (including female immigration detainees).

Under the terms of the Treatment of Offender's Act, a male prisoner can remain at Hydebank Wood to the day before his twenty fourth birthday.

Arrangements can be made to accommodate younger people at Hydebank Wood. Legislation also permits inmates of 15 years old to be held in Hydebank Wood if their offence is deemed to be of a very serious nature.

Female prisoners transferred from Mourne House, Maghaberry to Hydebank Wood in June 2004.

Female immigration detainees are also held in the female unit.

VISITING INFORMATION
Booking Procedure Each young person is given an individual Visit Reference Number which they quote when making a booking
Booking Phone No. 02890 253852
Booking Opening Time Mon - Sat; 08:30 - 16:00, Sun; 13:30 - 16:00
Minimum Booking Notice 24 Hours
Booking Email Address See below
Min Age Unaccompanied 18 (with the exception of a resident's brother or sister)

Visits can be booked online at www.niprisonservice.gov.uk

The Visitors' Complex can accomodate 18 visits per session in the main Visit Room and has 3 adjoining Legal Visit Rooms, plus 2 Closed Visit Rooms.

The Visitor Centre is managed by NIACRO - contact Philippa Bole, Tel: 028 9025 3849

Every Monday the young person is given a unique Booking Reference Number for the next two weeks. The visitor uses this number to book a visit.

New committals can have their first visit without a Reference Number, but the visit still needs to be booked by phone.

All visitors will, on their first visit, have to provide photographic evidence of their identity; be photographed for record purposes and have their finger scanned to enrol them on the new system. All young people in Hydebank Wood have been enrolled on the system.

The same identification that would be required to vote is acceptable. These include driving licence, passport, electoral identity card, senior citizen's smart pass or citizen's card.

You should allow a little extra time when booking your first visit to allow you to be enrolled on the system.

After being enrolled, your identity will checked before you enter the visits room and again when you are leaving the room. This simply involves your fingerscan being checked by staff and only takes a few seconds.

The fingerscan is not a fingerprint and will be used for no other purpose other than to identify the visitors to prison staff.

Your photograph and fingerscan will remain on the system for future visits and as a result you will not have to bring photographic identification every time you visit. All records are stored and protected in line with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998.

The new visitor and inmate identification arrangements will help to speed up your progress through visits and provide a safer environment for all.

HMP INVERNESS (Porterfield) Prison Regime Info

Address
Duffy Drive Porterfield Inverness IV2 3HH
Phone No. (01463) 229000
Governor / Director Angus MacVicar
Category High Security
Region Scotland
Operational Capacity 103
Cell Occupancy Single, double and multiple
Listener Scheme Yes
First Night Centre No

Prison, known locally as Porterfield, serves the Courts of the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney Isles and Moray, providing secure custody for all remand prisoners and short term adult prisoners, both male and female (segregated). It also holds a small number of long-term prisoners, prior to classification, on accumulated visits, or to support the operational needs of the SPS.
The prison in Inverness was originally in the Castle, which now houses part of the local police headquarters and Inverness Sheriff Court and District Courts. In 1902 the present prison was brought into use. Integral sanitation and electric power in cells was installed throughout in 1992-93. The establishment was awarded a Government Charter Mark in 1995 and 1998. Investors in People status was achieved in 1997 and again in 2000.

The present prison was opened in 1902, having relocated from nearby Inverness Castle to what was, at that time, the rural parish of Porterfield.
There were 25 male and 10 female prisoners in accommodation comprising of 49 cells. Throughout its subsequent history the prison has had a mixed population of men and women, convicted and untried prisoners. Today, however, the numbers are significantly higher, averaging around 150, and the cellular capacity has risen to 104.
The accommodation halls within the confines of the original wall have changed internally over the past 100 years, although their facades have remained the same. A number of extensions and extra buildings have been incrementally added to cope with rising and changing demands. Examples include the new Gate complex, the workshops and laundry. Other areas, such as facilities for healthcare and catering have been modernised.
The original cells were barely furnished. Now they have in-cell sanitation, bunk-beds, fitments, electric power and TVs – reflecting modern standards of living.
Prison labour was used to build the establishment. Subsequent employment included oakum-picking, sack sewing and mat-making, as well as maintenance of the prison estate and further building work. Physical drills and Bible classes punctuated the week. There is no mention in the records of 1903 of learning centres nor fitness centres such as those provided today. Programmes to address offending behaviour did not feature either, although perhaps the Chaplain (who “states that he spends upwards of 2 hours weekly in the prison”) and Mrs Werner, the “Lady Visitor” took such a role upon themselves.
The working environment for staff has also changed. The first Governor, John Nicol, had a house built for himself within the walls. Two houses were additionally erected for “married warders” and “female warders” had quarters provided too – supplied with drainage, gas, water and service pipes. Prison Officers now work an average of 37 hours a week and the concept of tied housing has been abandoned since the 1980s. Their job has evolved away from that of turnkey to actively engaging with prisoners in pursuit of the Scottish Prison Service model of correctional excellence.
HMP Inverness continues to serve courts in the Highlands, Islands and Moray – a large and diverse catchment area embracing rural and urban communities. The emphasis on safe and secure custody has not changed in over one hundred years, even if the approach has markedly evolved. Inverness prison is currently the smallest penal establishment in Scotland, but it has an expansive history which constantly unfolds to a new and challenging future.

Important Information for Disabled Visitors to Prisons from the Scottish Prison Service

Under the new Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 we have a duty to ensure we can evacuate disabled persons from any part of our Estate we give them access to. We achieve this by creating a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). If you have particular requirements please contact us with the following information:

Which establishment you are visiting, the date and time; and details of your requirements.

Travel Information

Arriving by Public Transport

The prison is within relatively easy walking distance from the town centre – around 15 minutes from the bus or train stations. If you take the exit road from the Bus Station and turn left along Academy Street, you pass the train station.

Having walked along Academy Street, cross over and along Inglis Street (which is pedestrianised) and up Market Brae steps, which face you at the end. They lead to Argyle Street, at the end of which is the Redcliffe Hotel. From this juncture you will see the prison wall to your left – follow it round, that is, turn left and first right, into Mitchell’s Lane. Then first left into Duffy Drive, where you will find the entrance to the prison.

If you would prefer you can take a taxi (approximate cost is £5).

Facilities at Inversness Station: Refreshments, toilets, baby changing facilities, pay phone and ATM. The whole station is step free and level to all platforms.

HMP The Isle of Wight was officially launched on 1st April 2009 and is the organisational amalgamation of the former HMP's Albany, Camp Hill, and Parkhurst. The prison holds approximately 1700 prisoners on the 3 sites with a central administration. The current populations remain unaltered. Camp Hill category C training, Albany category B sex offenders, Parkhurst category B training – with 50% cat B lifer and 50% VP population.

HMP KILMARNOCK Prison Regime Info

Phone No. (01563) 548800
Governor / Director Director: Sandy McEwan
Category High Security
Region Scotland
Operational Capacity 500
Cell Occupancy Single and double
Listener Scheme Yes

Kilmarnock is a closed mainstream high security establishment.
HMP Kilmarnock is located 3 miles to the south-east of Kilmarnock. The prison is the first in Scotland to be built under the private finance initiative (PFI) and became operational on 25 March 1999. The prison is operated under a 25 year contract by Serco Home Affairs Division, on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service, and is in its 10th operating year.
It has 500 single cells with a contractual maximum capacity of 692 prisoners. With effect from 1 February 2003, 596 prisoner places have been available at HMP Kilmarnock.
The prison is a closed mainstream high security establishment, which operates a similar regime to that available elsewhere, including Shotts, Glenochil and Perth. It accommodates male adult prisoners – remands, short-term and long-term - and male young offender remands. It does not have a national Top End facility but prisoners are able to apply through the normal procedures and gain the same access to national Top Ends and open prisons as from other mainstream establishments.
As with all Scottish Prisons, HM Prison Kilmarnock is subject to the Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions (Scotland) Rules 2006, as amended, and prisoners have the same rights at Kilmarnock as they would have in any other Scottish Prison. Although Kilmarnock Prison is operated by Serco, it is part of the SPS estate and prisoners remain under the same care agenda as that of the Scottish Prison Service.

Leeds is a local prison holding prisoners remanded or sentenced by the courts in West Yorkshire.

Leeds prison was built in 1847. It was a place of execution until 1960s, and was expanded from four wings to six wings in 1994.
Recent refurbishment has addressed many of the issues associated with under investment in Victorian prisons, although further work is needed to upgrade the buildings and facilities. A new gate complex opened in September 2002, providing much needed staff facilities and an improvement to the entry point for all visitors and staff, which is closer to the Visitors Centre.
A key priority is to ensure prisoners are transferred or discharged, having had their resettlement needs assessed and, where appropriate, settled accommodation and employment arranged. The prison also focuses on providing health and lifestyle support to prisoners, including drug detoxification and prescribing programmes and delivering the short duration drugs programme.
