Hi there is he is a state prison a federaL prison. Overseas calls are possible at both but there is a difference in how they are set up.

Thank-you for responding I believe he is in state prison. Do you have any advice on how to set it up? I always believed it wasn't possible

I use Truphone - I got an international number (you get a UK-number but can choose also a US number with maybe his area-code) and that way his 15 min. calls to me only cost $3,45.
Try it, another girl from here gave me this tip and it works beautifully! I just use an old phone for that SIM.

I am in the uk, there's loads of ways he can call you. Skype is probably the most popular one, just get a number near his prison. My guy pays about $7 to call me for 30 minutes, or he can call the number you already have but that's $28 for 30 minutes. He just has to get your numbers put on his calling list first

I'm in the UK and I pay around £7 a month to TollFreeForwarding for a local number close to my husbands prison. It's much cheaper for him to call me. Getting a Skype number is also good. I have both my landline and mobile connected to the local number so if I'm out he can still contact me. Don't worry about it too much you will find a way that suits you.

Thankyou for that, I thought you couldn't use toll free forwarding as call forwarding is usually banned by prisons? But it does sound good

We've never had any problems because of the way it works but if your unsure of the prison rules use skype as I would say thats the next best option. My friend uses Skype and hasn't had any problems

Can I just double check that I understand this correctly; even though CDCR is using GTL for inmate calls, my friend can call me (I'm in Europe) on my Skype number (which is local to him) if he has my number on his calls list ?
Thanks

It also depends on which state he is in.
Texas doesn't allow international phone calls.
If you managed to get a US mobile phone to receive calls, you would pay a fortune in roaming charges.
