Default Funding, not phones, is SC's real prison problem, experts say

Funding, not phones, is SC's real prison problem, experts say

COLUMBIA, SC "In prison, cellphones can facilitate escapes, target residents in the community and coordinate attacks within the institution.

“Cellphones pose a significant threat to correctional institutions,” said Lenard Vare, a corrections expert with more than 26 years’ experience managing prisons on the West Coast. “It’s about as dangerous to us as a knife or a gun.”

Seven inmates were killed and 17 others injured during a nearly eight-hour brawl Sunday night and Monday morning at Bishopville's Lee Correctional Institution, which houses some of the state’s most dangerous and longest-serving offenders.

Officials suspect cellphones were used to inform inmates in the second and third dorms that a fight had broken out in the first.

While some states have laws against cellphones in correctional facilities, a similar bill introduced to the state Senate in December is about to die in committee.

Experts point to staffing as the real problem, and a growing number of people are raising questions about whether prison officials are able to do enough to prevent inmates from having weapons."

Experts in suits usually only have opinions.
Prison is a sub culture unto itself, and no amount of staff or programs will ever stop the fight for power or currency. It's the same as on the outside. That just me, 25years in corrections.

The first step to eliminating deaths in SCDC is, eliminate deadly weapons. You will always have violence in prison but, getting a beating that's deserved outweighs getting stabbed or slashed. Gangs are nothing more than a group of people, the Gang with the most members control the prison, deadly weapons supplement head-count. Addressing the reson why inmates feel the need to join a gang will reduce the number of gang members. They join for protection, no deadly weapons means less need for protection.

SCDC has increased disciplinary action for possessing a cell phone, a slap on the wrist for possessing a weapon. Sad day...

One photo, shows a dead inmate with a makeshift hatchet next to him. Steel meshing cut into the shape of an ax head, attached to a white handle about 18 inches long.
Saw the photo on www Prison legal news. Com website

Everything is a weapon, given time.
A cement wall is all that is needed to turn anything sharp.
Weapons are an insurmountable problem.

I agree! It's sad, when Director Stalin is more concerned with cell phones than weapons. Until we press harder, Sterling is going to protect himself before our loved ones.

I honestly get so sad reading stuff like this. My BA is going to be in Criminology and Justice, hopefully when i'm finished with it, I can help with these issues. Or maybe start sometime.
