Is it everything you thought it would be? Has it been great, or terrible? I'm especially curious about those that have waited many many years and how long you waited.
I would say that it has been challenging. We all have hopes and dreams of what it will be like when our loved ones come home. The reality can be quite different. Any relationship that is worth it, takes work, and it's no different when our loved ones come home.
First of all, depending on how long they have been locked up, being out in society is a HUGE adjustment for them. Secondly, if anybody is anything like me, I had been used to doing everything for myself and I had to learn how to share my space again.
It has been a challenge, but we have grown as a couple because we now have to communicate a LOT, more so than when he was locked up. Fifteen minute phone calls and emails and two hour visits are nothing when compared to good old fashioned sit down, face to face communication and hammering things out when your relationship is on the line. We were apart for over 8 years. I say our relationship now is much more solid than when he went in. It's a challenge, but it can be done.
