Default phone questions-I got a call, but don't have an account with GTL???

Ok. New to this forum, not new to pto.
Hubby just got transferred to cci
I didnt know he left SQ until he called me collect (of course) on thurs morning. I was shocked for several reasons one being I thought I had to have some type of freakin acct with GTL.
Why do I have to have an accout to receive collect calls?
I have ATT as my phone service, and quest as my long distance.

Do I have to have a gtl acct and if I did, why did I get a call?
I dont get it.

Oftentimes you can get calls and don't need GTL. It all depends on how many calls you get. If you only get like a call a week, you should be fine, but if he starts calling say 5 times a week, GTL will eventually catch it and place a block on your phone until you call them and set up and account.

If you want to avoid a possible block, here's the number for GTL. They're morons, so be prepared. LOL 1.800.231.0193

Good luck!!

well, shoot.
I dont want to deal with those people, from what I have heard.
it really makes me angry that they can block MY phone!
would this block be just from incoming prison calls? or all collect calls (not that I get many of those at all .....once in a blue moon, but I want that option to get them if someone needs to call collect!)
I guess I will ask hubby to not call often enough to spur a block on the phone.

edit part...........
thanks for the info aliferzwife!!

It would only be blocked to collect calls from prisons. You might want to surf around in here and read all the threads on GTL. Stuff of nightmares in many cases. LOL I have never had an issue with GTL - or with MCI when they handled the prison calls - but so many seem to be having issues now.

Can't hurt to call GTL and see what they say. You could very well have it easy as far as signing up (I did back with MCI) and have no issues at all.

Either way, good luck!

They seem to have a direct billing agreement with Qwest- I get calls, too, with no GTL account and I'm also with Qwest for my home phone.

I have AT&T.. all the way around.. I receive calls once a month from my son who is in Tehachapi.. The calls are reasonable.. around 5 bucks for 30 minutes.
I was surprised I got a call from my other son in McFarland yesterday.. they had just installed new phones. I will post when I get the bill for that..

well, I got a letter yesterday from hubby.
He said he tried to call last sunday, but the phone is now blocked.
grrrrrrr
Oh well. so much for phone calls. We went for a year without getting them while he was in reception.
I refuse to do business with gtl. No one should have a monopoly on phone services.
And from the complaints I read......I aint going there.

Yeah GTL is all bad. Ive been told so many lies by this company its ridiculous. First they told me that I could increase my call limit by 5 for 3 months of paid bills then I wouldnt have a limit. Yeah not the case at all. The Max. amount of calls you can receive now on Advanced Pay (the only Cali option) is 30 calls. Which doesnt help me much since I receive calls from 2 prisons

I called GTL to figure out why my phone was blocked and just went ahead and set up the pre-paid account. I haven't run out of money on my account or exceeded my call limit, and honestly, everything's been going fine for me. *cross fingers* The only calls I've missed have been the ones I haven't been home to answer. And since I'm just the next area code away from the prison, my calls have been just under $5 for the 15-minute call. It's been worth it to me, to be able to get calls once in a while instead of having to wait for mail.

^ Do you mind me asking which area code the calls are coming from? I originally set up an account in Blythe since my friend was in ISP but now that he is in CEN my calls went from 3.75 to 5.30 and its in the same area code.

Default NYT article about jail phone system

i tried gtl quite a long time ago on my cell phone because that was the only way i could get his calls on a cell phone

we used up the 50 dollars so fast i nixed that option and quick
i think we had about 2 calls lasting maybe 20 minutes each and the 50 was gone

ive always gotten collect calls through atnt
they charge approx 3.50 just to receive the call then about 7 cents per minute
which is supposedly the same as any collect call in the usa

but i was told by someone when my man transferred to cci that gtl was mandatory i actually dont remember signing up for it but there it is on my bill

on the bill i see that gtl charges me 1.95 monthly for a single bill mthly fee as they call it
then for 15 minutes of talking they charged me 5.30 which is actually a little less than atnt used to charge

the thing that gripes me is if he calls and im not here and the answering machine answers i would get bills 3 or 4 dollars

i used to call atnt every month and whine and get some credit for those calls

i havent experienced this yet with gtl and he hasnt been there long enough to know whats going on with his unanswered attempts to call

found this new york times article on a colorado forum

Editorial
The Bankrupt-Your-Family Calling Plan
Published: December 22, 2006

Studies of prison inmates clearly show that keeping them in contact with
friends and family is vital to giving them a chance to create an honest
life after jail instead of committing new crimes that land them right
back behind bars. Yet the simple act of picking up the phone to call
home can be bankrupting for inmates and their families.

The cruel and counterproductive system now in place around the country
charges them as much as six times the going rate for collect calls
placed from inside state prisons. The collect-call service providers
keep a stranglehold on the business by paying the state prisons a
legalized kickback called a “commission.”

These costs are borne by spouses, parents and other collect-call
recipients who typically come from the country’s poorest families. Worse
still, these families can be barred from receiving a prisoner’s collect
call at all until they open costly accounts with the same companies that
provide the prison phone service.

With bills that sometimes reach into the hundreds of dollars a month,
families must often choose between talking to a jailed loved one and
paying the rent. The lost contact is especially crushing for imprisoned
parents, who make up more than half the national prison population and
are often held in prisons hundreds of miles away from their children.

A bill that went nowhere in Congress this year would have mandated fair
rates for interstate calls made from prison. The bill, introduced by
Representative Bobby Rush, Democrat of Illinois, would also have
required prisons to use both the collect-calling system and the less
expensive debit-calling system. Used in federal prisons, debit calling
lets inmates use computer-controlled accounts to pay for easily
monitored calls to specified phone numbers.

The collect-call-only system is being challenged in court in a number of
states, including New York, where a closely watched case is scheduled to
be argued before the state’s highest court in early January. The suit
rightly argues that the telephone markup is a hidden levy on families
who already support the prison system through their taxes.

State prison officials say the money is used to pay for programs that
benefit inmates. But it also gouges the poorest citizens — driving them
deeper into poverty — to pay for prison services that the state is
obligated to provide. It might be legal, but it is also
counterproductive and morally indefensible.
