Default Successful post-release business startups?

Who's made it work to launch their own business? How did you finance it, and how did you keep yourself fed while getting it established?

My son tried starting his own IT business after he served 6 months & was released on probation. No one would hire him for any other job so he hoped working for himself would help. It was tough & he only made $1600 the year he tried it. He got jobs from people off craigslist & referrals from people he knew. One guy still owes him $640 & has dropped from sight. It is really tough unless you have a good support system & a business that people will use & pay for.

A good resource is the Small Business Administration. They conduct seminars on how to start a business & other related topics. I have called the people at the one near me & they were super helpful with advice on taxes & other things.

I have to say that the GA TOPSTEP program is pretty useless unless you need job hunting skills. My son has a degree & 10 years corporate work experience. They were no help for him except to give him a list of 400 jobs posted through the Dept of Labor. When he asked them if they knew of a success story where someone with a felony had gotten white collar work he was told they didn't.

The DOC in GA does put on some hiring fairs for people released but they are usually manual labor & low paying unskilled jobs. Still it might be a place to start. looking in your area.

The Goodwills in many areas have career centers that help people with convictions find work. I was told they don't work with anyone having a sex crime conviction. Craigslist also has jobs under the "gigs" section & many people there don't ask about backgrounds.
