Default Action Alert: Lower Prison Phone Costs

CUREnational Action Alert: H.R. 555 - Inmate Telephones

PLEASE SEND A LETTER LIKE THIS NOW TO YOUR TWO SENATORS AND ONE
REPRESENTATIVE

Sen.
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Sen.,

Your help is needed with a very important problem that affects family
members of people in prison. Contact with family members during
incarceration is an essential aspect of rehabilitation and reentry.

The primary means of communication is through phone calls.
Unfortunately, these calls are extremely expensive. Charges can be as
high as $20 for a 15 minute call.

The reason for this is that the contracted phone company pays a
commission to the prison system. These commissions are usually in the
range of 40-50% and this cost is passed on to the family members.

Legislation to address this problem has been introduced in the past
two Congresses by Cong. Bobby Rush. In this Congress, the 110th,
the bill is H.R. 555.

HR 555 would authorize the Federal Communications Commission to
prohibit these commissions and bring about other cost-reducing measures.

The American Bar Association and the National Association of women
Judges have endorsed HR 555.

Senator, we know you have helped people who unfortunately do not have
a "voice" because they are poor and powerless. Would you please
introduce HR 555 in the Senate?

Whatever consideration you give to this request will be most
appreciated.

Sincerely

name and organization
