I have no experience with susanville, but I write to inmates at four different California prisons. My experience is that the prison adds one to two days for letters getting from me to the inmate and a day or less from the inmate to me.

So, about 3 to 4 days for a letter to get to me, 5 to 6 for my letter to get to him

I just put them in an envelope and send them.

The "standard" envelope is a #10, 4.125" x 9.5" I use a #11 envelope (4.5" x 10.375") that allows me to put a few # 10 envelopes, sheets of paper and a book of stamps. Two regular postage stamps will allow up to three ounces, which is about what fits.

Occasionally I send a larger package using one of those large manila envelopes that has the metal tabs. The tabs could be an issue, but so far I haven't had any problem. I can load this up and ship it for about $2.50. Watch the weight, there is a 1 pound limit.

I have also had pre-stamped envelopes shipped to an inmate directly from the post office. Do NOT pre-apply a stamp to envelopes and send yourself, that is not allowed. I believe the logic here is that contraband could be hidden under the stamp. But the envelopes embossed with postage from the Post Office are allowed.

I have also sent blank greeting cards and postcards.

Do I walk into the post office for the pre stamped envelopes or is this something that can be done online? Online is so much better for me...

You can do both, but if you prefer to buy them online, Here's the link:

Welcome to Prison Talk. You may find information posted in the CA prison forums. Be sure to check about "inmate quarterly packages" too. Your son may also be able to find out from his prison counselor.

Thank You so much for the information. I was able to find out that i cant send envelopes that i put the stamps on... I guess they have to be printed out from the Post Office.... Good to know!! That must be part of the reason I got the other package sent back to me....
