Default Just for fun...How much do you know about OUR Maine?

I borrowed this idea from Mississippi. Thanks Amy.

I will try to post a question every day or every other day.
If no one has come up with the answer by the time I post the next question I will post the answer.

How many counties are in Maine and can you name them all?

16 counties in our State, Cumberland and Franklin. Piscataquis, Somerset, Aroostook, Androscoggin Sagadahoc, Kennebec, Lincoln, Knox and Hancock Waldo, Washington and York Oxford and Penobscot! Remember sing it to the tune of "Old McDonald."

This is a cute idea.

Sheila

YEAH!! Sheila
I remember singing it to.

My mom guessed 14 counties when I asked her this morning.
She did correctly guess the answer to the Mississippi question though.

That question was too tough.
I could not find the answer on the internet.

In eighth grade my teacher, Mr. Jumper decided to teach either a whole quarter or semester on the "History of Maine". In Woolwich like other small towns in Maine the elementary school went from Kindergarten to 8th grade.

I was in 8th grade (eek - ummmm) in 1978.
At that time there were 32 cities.
I remember because it just happened to be double the number of counties.

I doubt if cities get added or removed very often.

Answers:

Current capital: Augusta
Previous capital: Portland

Why moved: "In 1832 the capital was moved to Augusta, a more centrally located site."

Populations from 2000 Census for comparison:
Augusta: 18,560
Portland: 64,429
Boston (MA): 589,141
