It really sucks because there is a Low FCI only about 20 mins away. I really shouldn't complain, though, it seems most have to travel far longer. Sorry!

Wow, that is so far! Why did they place him so far away? My LO is in Beaumont as well.

194 miles each way. I could get extended visits if I traveled 200. Love those prison rules. NOT!

I only fly now, Iím getting older and the drive is just too long, and my husband has no time off to drive with me. I stay for 2 weeks and that gives me 4 visits, I feel I am truly blessed as I have family that picks me up and drops me off at the Prison, and opens their home for me to stay. Last year I made 2 trips and this year Iíve made one in May and I will be going in November for the 2nd trip. Sure I wish he was closer, but I really hope he is never moved to a different facility, this is the best facility for him and as far as Prisons go heís lucky, not once have they been on Lockdown since heís been there.
I feel your pain. My first trip was exhausting. I'm in FL my LO is in CA. I'm driving halfway in 26 days then a flight to CA. It's our 1st family visit. Then I'll make my way west permanently after that. This is all new to me, I'm referring to the dedication to put forth such effort for love. It's been worth it and I hope to learn how to get through the rough times by connecting this way.

We are in the same city, so 3 minutes. Makes it less difficult to maintain a marriage with her in prison. I'm "lucky".

Sorry mistake on words, shy of the limit for school or work hours. I can't visit more than once in 30 days because I'm within 250 miles of the prison. So I try to visit every 6-7 weeks.

This is from the CDCR website:

The prisoner’s work or school hours: Generally a prisoner may not visit during the hours he/she is assigned to a job or to school. Under limited circumstances, a prisoner may obtain permission to visit during work or school hours, but such circumstances are generally limited to family visits, a rare visit (visitor has not visited in more than six months), an emergency visit (death or serious illness of family member), or excessive distance (visitor comes from more than 250 miles and has not visited in the last 30 days). The prisoner must obtain prior written approval to visit during work or school hours by seeking Excused Time Off (ETO) from his/her supervisor.
