Default ACTION ALERT FROM MARYLAND'S OUTSIDE CONNECTION--Calls from around the world welcomed

ACTION ALERT FROM MARYLAND’S OUTSIDE CONNECTION’S EMERGENCY RESPONSE NETWORK: Participate in Maryland’s Outside Connection’s (MOC) Call-In Campaign on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 (10:00 am – 11:00 am –EST) to Protest the Recent Handling of Outbreaks of Violence throughout Maryland’s Prison System

Maryland’s prison system has gained the reputation of one of the most poorly managed systems in the country. In the last year there have been numerous stabbings and murders at institutions throughout the state that could have been avoided with properly trained staff and adequate programming for inmates.

At a forum in May 2007 sponsored by Families against Injustice (FAI), Assistant Commissioner Wendell France agreed to hold a meeting to discuss the Division of Correction’s plan to reduce violence within the institutions. He cancelled the meeting without a reschedule date. Since this time, there have been 20 stabbings and violent outbreaks at three prisons.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO TAKE PART IN THE ACTION: Family members, supports and friends of those impacted by the Maryland Prison System should call Gary D. Maynard, the Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services at (410) 339-5005 between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (EST) on Wednesday, August 1, 2007. If you are a registered voter in Maryland, then be sure to mention it. Please demand the following:

1. A meeting with the DOC that outlines an action plan with a timelime to reduce violence within the prisons. Ask them to call Maryland’s Outside Connection at (202) 446-8780 or email us at outsideconnect@hotmail.com to schedule a meeting.

2. An investigation into the treatment of inmates during recent lockdowns at institutions in Hagerstown and Cumberland that included inmates not receiving medicine, adequate food and water in sweltering temperatures.

THE BACK-UP PLAN: Call Governor Martin O’Malley at (410) 974-3901 or 1-800-811-8336, if the lines become too busy or if Public Safety and Correctional Services stops answering the phone.

PASS IT ON: Please encourage others to participate in the call in campaign.

REPORT BACK: We also ask that you report back to us at outsideconnect@hotmail.com or (202) 446-8780 to let us know how your call went.

PLANNED FOLLOW-THROUGH: MOC will keep you updated through email contacts and postings on Prisontalk.com (search for Maryland).
