Default Massachusetts Inmate Darrell Jones Speaks Out Against Prison Abuse and Racism

Massachusetts Inmate Darrell Jones Speaks Out Against Prison Abuse and Racism

June 04, 2009 by Dee

Jones is Put in Solitary Confinement the Next Day

Darrell Jones, a prisoner at Old Colony Correctional Center (OCCC), a Massachusetts medium security facility kept notes, documents, and writings about the injustices he saw going on behind the walls. He thought he was doing the right thing by reporting the things he felt mattered. He stated he wrote all his complaints down and kept to himself. He states "His whole issue was to get the issues that mattered the most to prison commissioner Harold Clarke." Clark was quoted saying at an earlier date "'We are looking at over two million people incarcerated' nationally, [Clarke] says. 'If we fail to respond to their needs, they will go out and create more victims." by columnist Tobey Frost. More can be read here.

In an audio recording, Jones speaks about the things that were going on at OCCC. Some of his complaints and issues, according to Minethatbirdmedia website were that he questioned the CRA programs, and postmasters programs. He talks about favoritism among the inmates, and one group of inmates being used against another. He states his paperwork was denied and stolen. He also requested cameras be installed in "safe" areas where inmates where getting in fights, and where officers would "get in your face". Jones reports guards playing games on computers, and being on the phone all day.

He also reports no money granted for programs, videos, etc. He claims the African Heritage program was closed, the only black program which had the most members. He states this program was closed for no reason. He also claims they "used my son as a tool against me."

He alleges the retaliation against him was to "cover up what they are doing," and that "someone is trying to turn this system upside down." More can be heard on the audio recordinghere.

Just one day after the recording went public, Jones alleges he was thrown into "the hole," or a solitary confinement unit, and feels it was retaliation for speaking out about abuses and racism in OCCC. He stated in another audio recording that can be heard here, that he did everything the right way, but was still punished for it.

Darrell Jones has been noted in the past for his work with other inmates at OCCC in attempts to get them to admit and apologize to their victims for the crimes they committed. According to "The Bulletin Newspapers" He and several other inmates can be viewed on a video by The Center for Teen Empowerment called Voices from Behind the Wall, which was Jone's idea. "In February, The Bulletin profiled Jones' attempts to work with community leaders and politicians on ways inmates can help end the cycle of youth violence by demystifying and de-glorifying the myths about prison life." More on that article can be read here.

People are urged to go to The MinethatbirdMedia website and listen to the audio tapes recorded by Darrell Jones. Jones has since been transfered from OCCC to another Massachusetts Prison.
