Default Please support the Second Chance Act

Any of us who have experienced the struggle of trying to have a successful re-entry or have a loved one struggling to regain a life, know how badly reform is needed. The legal discrimination against the formerly incarcerated or anyone with a conviction label has made that struggle even harder. There is a bill in Congress that is a step towards giving people the opportunity to prove they are more than the label they have.

The Second Chance Act is an effort to give people who have completed their punishment the chance to return to their communities as law-abiding and contributing members of society. By providing the resources needed to coordinate reentry services and policies at the state and local levels, the bill encourages communities to work to help formerly incarcerated men, women, and young people and provides second chances that lower the chance of people returning to incarceration.

Please go to this site & sign to have the letter sent to your elected officials. Please share it with everyone you can. If we don't speak out, no one will.

This should get bi-partisan support. It was a Republican who introduced it.

Here are the ways you can contact your elected representatives directly: http://www.americantrails.org/resour...tCongress.html

Yes it is ridiculous we treat them as criminals the rest of their lives. They are a criminal to the point they made the choice of committing the crime, the rest of their life if they don't committing another crime they are no longer a criminal. Second chances are important.

Signed. I'm all for people having the resources to better themselves post-incarceration. In favor of most anything that gives them hope of a successful reentry to society as well.

When I try to sign it says "Sorry, there are no targets in your area." What does that mean?

It may mean that there are no representatives in your area to write to but I think that's wrong. Here is a link to the site where I found the advocacy letter. https://www.prisonfellowship.org/abo...orization-act/

Go there & then scroll down to where it says Take Action. The 1st item has a place where you can click on advocacy tool. That should take you where you enter your zipcode & the right representative should pop up. Then you can follow the easy instructions to send your support.

The Bill linked in the OP was from a previous Legislative session. It was introduced during July 2015 and died in Committee.

That is not to say that similar re-authorization bills might not be filed in a current Session, but it is critical to pay attention to whether a request to support legislation is actually something current.
