i really like all the poems. its kind of weird but alot of the things that were written i have heard my fiance say too. my fiance is truly my hero. he is a great man. he even tries to protect me even when he is behind bars. he stays worried about me all the time,he may be in prison but he is the best lover a woman could ask for. he has showed me that life isnt about waiting for the storm to pass. life is about learning to dance in the rain.

Here are a few poems just written by my son. He is currently incarcerated at ERJ in Martinsburg, WV, awaiting indictments.

NOT TODAY
---John Watson

Mixed up emotions fade like fuzzy radio stations
God’s creations crumbling like towers of the past
How long does one’s short life last?
When we tear each other down; deteriorate into the soil
That makes the ground
That we get buried beneath; tramped on by feet
But to defeat you must be defeated along the way
As I lie on my back and realize the little fact
That it’s just not my day, just not today. I gotta say
I’m not ready to be brought down
Just don’t you forget that I stand a mile high
And won’t stop till the day that I die
Not scared to shed a tear, but I cannot cry
Why oh why didn’t I straighten out this train wreck
Before it came to this
The little things in life that are hard to miss
But only through failure do you find perfection
And only true forgiveness comes through confession
Because of my choices I deal with this
And this is life’s lesson.

ESCAPE
---John Watson

My escape comes when my eye lids shut and my dreams whisk me away
If only I could stay gone from this hell that would be ok.
My escape comes when I read letters from the world I used to know
And everything I used to feel, like rain on my face or the cold of the snow.
But from a 4 inch window I watch grass grow very slow
As the breeze I can imagine blows thru the trees
And like an addiction, like a disease
I yearn for the sun on my face
To remember ice cream and what it would taste
Like it or not the sun don’t shine inside
Sun don’t shine when you’re on a state ride
3 meals a day and all the time to think
Always mentally on the brink
Of a meltdown in a blink
Tired of washing my clothes in the sink
To make sure they’re clean.
But in my head is my escape
And like a remote I skip this scene
Lights out, time to go to sleep
And finally my escape starts to creep.

INNER THOUGHTS
---John Watson

When you give a man nothing but time, his mind roams
Traveling a roller coaster of his soul
So many paths we travel down through life
Looking for our part, our roll
Time takes its toll on insanity
Inner thoughts blink at glimpses of sunshine
In the sand we must draw a line
That we all cross time to time
Brings us back to the reality we know
Life is like a movie, a Broadway show
We all are actors doing our part until the curtain must close
We walk past caskets, shed our tears and leave one rose.
Time is where the soul goes while inner thoughts race thru clouds and space
Tears caress the cheeks and build into lakes
That ripples into a butterfly effect.
Like inner thoughts that become shipwrecked upon the mind
I lay my head down knowing in time I’ll be fine.

This is an old post but the 'prison life' poem touches me. It shows the depth of a lost soul trying to find its way back. I hope david is doing well today and has found peace in himself from within himself not depending on others. We only know the people in our families because of blood relations but if it wasn't for that, that would be it. Its sad but once you realize that you have to first learn to make it in this world alone, you will grow.

Very well said! I feel the same about mine... It's really nice to know that others see them as people as well! We do love our men don't we?

David I really like this poem. It hurts me to read because I WAS that person. I picked up and walked away from the man I love for almost three years. I didn't want to. I was messing up bad and developed a habit and could not face him. I am now enjoying the sober life, attending bible studies, and realizing the person I am capable of being. Me and my love are back together and you poem is a big inspiration to me. You touched on subjects that he refuses to talk about and I need to know. This poem did make me feel like shit, but it is a good poem and I will use it to remind me of the person I do NOT want to be.

"Stay In Touch"
Though I'm not around like I once was so much,
like an abandon lice that suddenly lost it's touch,
some say there's a reason for not staying in touch.
But I've looked and I've searched and couldn't find such.
Some say there is no phone and they think that's cool.
But there are things called stamps, pencils and paper that they can use as tools.
Sometimes I sit and think fatefully to myself,
it's like being a book placed high upon a shelf.
So please change places one day and thin far ahead.
Because one day you scan be that book that so wants to be read.
So when your just sitting around not doing much,
get a stamp, pencil and paper and please stay in touch.
David H

"Forget me Not"
Fall down like rain,
wet tears on my face.
Aprison cell that's supposed to replace a place called home.
Many miles from my people yes it's often hard.
Will they take time to write or even send a card?
Or do they tell themselves, "Damn, I really miss him."
Or forget about me locked away in ;the system.
Somedays I'm Ok.
Somedays it's the blues.
But, nobody knows unless they walk in my shoes.
The need to be loved goes way deeper than self.
More important than any material wealth.
I'm paying my dues for my crime.
So please, forget me not while I'm serving my time.
You take care and write soon.
Much love.
David H

"Prison Life"
It's waitingg on letters when your doing time and your family don't write you or send you a dime.
It's waiting on visits that nevert take place, from friends or lobed ones who forget your face.
It's hearing them lie and say they are trying.
Making you promises, but you know they are lying.
It's making plans with someone whom you thought you knew.
But their plans suddenly change and it didn't include you.
It's hearing them say how much they care,
but in your time of need they are never there.
It's hearing them promise and it goes straight to you head,
but when puch comes to shove they just leave you for dead.
It's feelings and love, honor and pride, pain and emotions and hurting inside.
It's expressing yourself to your loved ones and friends.
But they can't feel your pain because your in the pen.
It's calling and hearing of blocks on the phone.
But you maintain because life goes on.
It's really messed up that your doing time,
but that's life out of sight out of mind and that's prison life.
David H
This brought tears to my eyes i love ur poems some days i feel like I'm locked up i don't hear his voice or no visits only because we are 900 miles apart i think about him 24/7 but i will never know what he really really feels inside because i can't walk in his shoes keep writing and stay strong

Thumbs up

Wow! Those poems really made me think. It's like my husband has been in out of prison since we got together almost 11 years ago. We split up a year ago because I'm trying to stay clean and he couldn't and now he's back in prison again. My attitude towards it all was "oh well he chose that life and that is his own fault." I was the only one who would ever write to him or visit him or send him money all the other times because his family isn't there for him. This time I haven't done any of the above. This poem really touched my heart. It made me realize that when I was out there running the streets, it wasn't that I didn't love my kids or my family, it was that I just couldn't stop. It took me a long time to find my out and I still struggled in between. It was a process. I now realize that he is in his own process and just because he hasn't found a way out doesn't mean that he isn't human. He has feelings and needs. These poems made me realize that I still need to be there for him and at least send him letters and visit since the Dominguez Unit is here in the same city I am in. Thanks. You really touched my heart.

Hi David!! I Have a son in prison and I came to this forum trying to find ways to be there for my son more. I know no matter what we do for the ones on the inside will never change the pain that they will go through. I hope just letting people like yourself know someone like me is always praying for you and all the others. I wish I could do so much more then what I am doing now. I try to treat people as I want them to treat me. I try to walk in someone else's shoe's that are worse off than me so I can do more. Plz keep writing and know your not alone. I will be praying for you. Thank you Rain for posting his heart to us. I hope more people will see what is going on inside the walls of Hell and stand up and fight back and change the way the system treats are loved ones.

Thank David for the poems for me, they are really touching and made me want to grab pen and paper and write my penpals, eventhough I just send them a letter. We will never really fully understand how important mail is to those in prison and poems like this are a reminder, so David, thank you for sharing these poems with us all xxx hang in there xxx syl
