If I told you what I know about women in prison....well.....the truth is stranger than fiction.

Advisory for PTO Members Regarding Requests from Journalists & Members of the Media, and Students/Researchers:

PTO welcomes journalists and/or members of the media to learn and educate themselves about prisons, prisoners, and their loved ones, as well as students and researchers doing research on these subjects.

We will, occasionally, allow the media or students/researchers to request information and personal stories from our members. However, PTO does not endorse any journalist, member of the media, story/report, media outlet, student/researcher, or educational/research institution.

If you decide to communicate with a media representative or a researcher, then you assume all of the risks involved. PTO is in no way liable for the outcome of the story/report/paper. Communication with members of the media and students/researchers is completely voluntarily and PTO holds no responsibility for the consequences of that communication.

PTO does not screen or authenticate any person(s) claiming to be from the media or from an educational/research institution, nor does PTO authenticate their motivations for obtaining the information.

As always, the disclosure of personal information (either yours or someone that is incarcerated) may have some serious repercussions. PTO has no way of predicting how the media or any researcher will present your story or that of your loved one. Any relationship with the media or any researchers is to be entered into at your own risk.

If you receive an unsolicited email or private message from a person claiming to be from the media or researching information for an educational or research institution, report it to the PTO Administration immediately

My several years of experience having a female LO in prison are generally summed up in posts throughout this site. There's a few formerly incarcerated women here but their level of willingness to talk may or may not be high. My advice would be to read those. The information you seek, if you really want to get a base level idea, is all over this site.

Do NOT get a pen pal solely for the purpose of coming up with ideas for a novel. That is abusing a person and a potential relationship. If you are sold on the idea of a pen pal, be totally up front about your desire to use that relationship and the experiences of your pen pal for the purposes of a novel and financial gain.

Life has enough drama to offer so be careful "using" other people to "create" drama, for a novel or otherwise...
Plus: we are all here on this forum for support because we all have loved ones in prison. Don't feed off us please.

Thats why I came here instead of writing to somebody who is currently incarcerated.

1. Someone already wrote "Orange is the New Black"

2. How do you intend to compensate responders for their stories and for doing your research for you?

If the OP wants to write a good story then she needs to take the time to earn the trust of women that are or have been incarcerated. Just having a setting and a dramatic plot device is not enough in a genre that has no shortage of attention, mostly bad. No amount of talent as a storyteller can make up for relationships and first hand knowledge.

Or, to save our loved ones, just write about a woman in a far away place a very long time ago. I don't know, a woman in Newgate Prison, London, say ~1817. Jane Austen goes to prison, sounds pretty safe these days. Just don't transport her to Australia. Our good Australian friends may have a bone to pick with you if you get the history wrong.

If you don't have the background to be able to write about a woman prisoner, you need to do far more research than you can find here. It's a vast, interwoven set of circumstances and personalities, and each prison works a little differently. You need a lot more than a character and a sense of drama!

Have you tried starting with a writer's workshop?

Why the desire to write about a woman prisoner, anyway?

And Piper Kerman did a little time in order to write that book (and generate a HIGHLY fictional television series).

Here's my take:
Writing about prison life is only acceptable if you a) have been in one as an inmate, b) have worked in a corrections environment, or c) have spent an inordinate amount of time with folks in category a & b or their loved ones and your intent is to disseminate true and socially beneficial information.

Anything outside of that runs the risk of really getting it wrong and damaging the tireless work that advocates do to improve incarceration systems. It's all fun and fiction until someone takes what you've written as truth and votes accordingly.

This is not true!!!

True! Some of us are. Not all. We all have our reasons, and this is a support community, but it is also a place to share information, stories, and also a place to help current inmates (through informing their loved ones and giving them access to items such as the newsletter which can be printed and mailed) and former inmates (in fact what sometimes gets forgotten is that the site founder conceptualized this site while an inmate!)

We are a very diverse crowd!

Have you tried going to your nearest public library? There are almost an unlimited number of books written about and/or by inmates and ex-inmates. There are fiction, non-fiction and poetry; there are also many blogs on the www written by inmates about their experiences.

Good luck & happy writing!

Perhaps you should consider writing about something you actually have knowledge about?

If I want my knowledge put into a book, I’ll write it myself and get the profits

If you haven’t made any headway in six months and your only research strategy is “please help me I’m begging you” then perhaps it’s time to pursue another hobby. Being a writer doesn’t seem to be your calling.
