His DNA will be added to the national "Combined DNA Index System" (CODIS) data bank. Most States and the federal government require it for anyone convicted of any felony crime.

Most people in the criminal justice system have to give a blood sample for DNA purposes before they are released. It is the law in most states and federally.

They also do std testing before release. It’s just routine in case he’s approved for parole. If not, they’ll draw it again when he is released.

DNA is done with a mouth swab. Could be a simple medical screen.

Mine, in federal prison required a blood sample for DNA/Codis, so it differs by prison system.
