Default Restitution/Garnishment

Well, I made it all through probation and 15+ years post conviction without paying...but just started getting garnished.

What options do I have to address this...negotiate better terms, etc? Do any law firms specialize in this? Thanks!!

You didn't pay your restitution and it is being garnished and now you want to negotiate terms??? Um, perhaps you should have thought about that 15 years ago and paid a little at a time then you wouldn't have to be in this situation.

The DOJ's financial litigation unit in Washington DC will decide how much you will be required to pay, and how it will be collected. They have access to the full power of the federal courts to attach, seize, etc. anything of value that you possess. You can either fight them in court, which will definitely add additional costs to what you already owe, or try to negotiate a reasonable payment plan with FLU.

It is what it is. I had very little to no income over those years due to my conviction. Just looking for options.

...
Is the FLU based in DC or does each district court have their own unit?

You owe the money. Why fight it? It is the price you need to pay as part of your crime to make your victim(s) whole. For some reason, you got a free pass for all of those years. Trying to fight it will only cost you more money, not to mention the FLU has a longer reach than the IRS so you're pretty much stuck and it's unlikely you're going to win if they deferred collecting anything all this time.

Also if you pay it then you won't have to look over your shoulder for the rest of your life.

I don't know how FLU is staffed, one office or many? But they find a way to collect everywhere in the country.
