Default Arizona's SB1142, the latest threat to activism

"SB1142 expands the state’s racketeering laws, now aimed at organized crime, to also include rioting. And it redefines what constitutes rioting to include actions that result in damage to the property of others.

But the real heart of the legislation is what Democrats say is the guilt by association — and giving the government the right to criminally prosecute and seize the assets of everyone who planned a protest and everyone who participated. And what’s worse, said Sen. Steve Farley, D-Tucson, is that the person who may have broken a window, triggering the claim there was a riot, might actually not be a member of the group but someone from the other side."

Just a heads-up to anyone planning to attend protests, vigils or demonstrations in Arizona. Know how this latest push to quell opposition can affect you and how to best avoid it (good luck, it's pretty broad). Lawmakers are intending to challenge from what I've read, so worth watching.

Default Not just Arizona!

Something scary a lot like that one also showed up in the Washington State Senate. Everyone should check their own state to see if something similar is being pushed.

See if your state is mentioned in this article: https://theintercept.com/2017/01/23/...ceful-protest/

Here's just one paragraph from that article:
Quote:
In North Carolina, a Republican lawmaker has pledged to introduce legislation to criminalize protestors heckling politicians in the state after an incident over inaugural weekend in Washington, D.C. in which demonstrators persistently shouted at the state’s former governor Pat McCrory.
So of course I called my state Senator's office. The staffer who answered the phone said his boss was completely against the WA anti-protest bill. He sounded like the proposed legislation offended him personally, in fact.

Well this is depressing. Thanks for the share. Hoping the pushback is strong in every state.

Ahhh, but it can't happen here....we don't have authoritarian tendencies.

I'm imagining what would have happened to me during the Viet Nam protests. Out there in the middle of southern Indiana it was mostly weird right-wing and Klan members. We had protests, marches, teach-ins, you name it. One of the students smooshed a whipped cream pie into Clark Kerr's face, there was uproar, etc., the Klan was patrolling the edges of campus, the Black Market was fire-bombed....we could have been blamed for so much of it, sued, tossed out of school, fined 'til our ears bled....and the damned war would have gone on and on.

Lousy law, worthy of the Indiana legislature (who once passed a law that would not allow married couples to sleep together in an effort to stop sex on campus, lol), so they will probably take it up next.

Funny you should mention Indiana.

http://www.indystar.com/story/news/p...ffic/96763926/

Quote:
As written, the bill would give authorities 15 minutes to “dispatch all available law enforcement officers” after receiving a report of 10 or more people illegally blocking traffic “with directions to use any means necessary to clear the roads.”
"Any means necessary". Let that sink in.

Arizona's SB 1142 is dead on arrival at the Arizona House.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...bill/98474882/

Quote:
As he listened to the callers, Mesnard realized their belief that the legislation was intended to curb free-speech rights outweighed any merits its supporters might put forward. He carefully read the legislation and by the time he returned Monday to his office, where there were more than 100 messages about the bill awaiting him, he decided he would kill the measure

Terrific news. Thank you for the update.

Now to watch the other 10 states follow suit.

If it hadn't been dead before its introduction, it would certainly have died in the Circuit Court.
