I too think you made a very wise decision in paying of the restitution.

I continue to use my husbandís two Chase credit cards (United and Freedom) cards regularly) both without any issue while heís in prison. He also has a Citicard and Discover as well as a few others. No one has given us a problem as far as credit cards with the exception of Citicard having a fraud issue and my having to deal with that as POA to close it and get a new one.

The only place that we have had any issue since his sentencing whatsoever with closing an account due to his being a felon was E*TRADE telling him they were closing his Account and telling him they didnít have to tell him why. It was one of his IRAs and right before he was leaving so it was a little nerve wracking but we were able to transfer to Ameritrade without issue.

Canít say the OP will have an issue applying for new credit but it wonít huet to try if he can get 0% APR and no balance transfer fees.

It seems like USAA works harder to find "reputational risks" than Chase does. At least Chase didn't drop me even after my (much too) publicized criminal case. USAA claims to be there forever for former military members, but they aren't.

Chase kept me from getting a bank account for 7 years because I had ID theft and they claimed I had a checking account and owed them money they treated me horribly. I have since straightened this out they were the only company who refused to try to help me get this worked out!!!

Hopefully a last update.

In 2016 and 2017, I had small refunds coming to me. In each of those instances, I got a letter (TOP - Tax offset program) that stated the refunds were being applied to the restitution.

In 2016, though the refund amount $307, only $290 was applied, with no explanation given for the missing $17. I wrote a letter, but declined to send it, figuring it might reconcile itself, but kept the letter in my file just in case.

In 2017, I purposely maxed out my IRA to use the tax credit to pay more restitution down, knowing it would likely be offset through TOP. And, I did get a letter stating that would happen.

So, now, my small problem is that I'm paid off, if they take those amounts into account. I wrote my contact at FLU, emailed copies of the documents, with dates and amounts highlighted, making things just as easy as I possibly could.

That was a couple of weeks ago, and haven't heard back. My concern is that they're going to send me another bill - which I don't want to pay, even though eventually, they might figure it out and reimburse me.

I'm sure my contact at FLU will be able to advise when the time comes in a couple weeks, but I'd rather just be done with this mess once and for all.

In the meantime, anyone have any insights they can share?

For the IRS to take another refund under the offset program, FLU would have to notify them that you still owe restitution. If they already did that before you finished paying off your restitution, and failed to withdraw it when you did, you will have to navigate the bureaucratic maze to have your money returned.

Start with your FLU agent and then: The IRS has a way to determine if your account is still included in the offset program,

"Call the FMS at 1-800-304-3107 to find out if your refund was reduced because of an offset.

Call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service at 1-877-777-4778 (or visit www.irs.gov/advocate) if you feel your refund was reduced in error. The service is free".

Last update on this topic:

I got a thick packet from FLU - they state in writing that I'm paid in full, and that any liens should be removed.

So, one monkey off my back. Just in time, too. My employer is not doing well from a revenue basis and I may be the last man standing, but it doesn't look good.

I'm debating on opening my own place without the Feds sniffing in everything, I'll be breathing easier in taking on financing if/when necessary.

Man, wish I could go back and tell previous me not to be such an idiot. So much time and opportunities wasted! Well, at least I'm a little smarter now.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Great news that you are completely finished with your sentence, what a relief. Congratulations.
