Default Article: Two arraigned in shooting

By Heidi Bell Gease, Journal Staff Writer

RAPID CITY - Two men charged in connection with an Aug. 19 shooting on East New York Street have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

William Christopher Andrews, 19, Rapid City, and Eric Wade Apple, 28, Pine Ridge, were both arraigned Thursday in 7th Circuit Court.

Andrews was initially charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a 9 mm handgun, hitting a man in the forehead with the ricochet during an assault. On Aug. 24, a Pennington County grand jury instead indicted Andrews on one count of first-degree robbery, one count of committing a felony with a firearm, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of attempted first-degree robbery, according to court records.

Apple was initially charged with one count of accessory to attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The grand jury instead indicted him on one count of first-degree robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of attempted first-degree robbery.

First-degree robbery carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and a $25,000 fine upon conviction, as does committing a felony with a firearm. Each count of aggravated assault is punishable by 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine upon conviction. Attempted first-degree robbery is punishable by 12-1/2 years in prison and a $12,500 fine upon conviction.

The shooting victim was not seriously injured. Court documents indicate the bullet entered and exited under the man's skin.
