If he's an indigent inmate he should be receiving his meds regardless of ability to pay.

Nevada prisoners are charged an $8.00 medical copayment, but I wasn't able to find if it is waived for indigent inmates. In federal prisons, co-pays are waived for "chronic care" prisoners, and it seems like Nevada may not charge them either.

"Health care for inmates paid for mostly by Nevada General Fund

Inmates requesting care are charged an $8 co-pay to offset costs

Prison directed care exempted from co-pay (i.e.,chronic disease clinics and maintenance drugs)

Chronic disease clinics and treatment helps manage chronic disease conditions and reduce long term health care costs "

He will be getting some kind of medication though it may not be the same one he would otherwise get on the outside. Due to the way the United States works medication can be very expensive. Generics are often substituted and these are usually off patent drugs.

Some of the classes of drugs and the types of drugs they use in prisons can be alarming to say the least if you read up on the side effects and how the drugs are tolerated by some people.

My suggestion is that if he is on something that is working then its best not to question why or how. The world of psychopharmacology is very different today than before the 1990s when modern drugs began to be developed. The older types of drugs prior to that are sometimes used. Their side effects can be alarming but if they're working then don't question why.

At least they're getting something.
