I once knew a guy on San Quentin's Death Row. We corresponded for 4 years and then I stopped. Well in 07 out of blue for my b-day he sent me a hand made card with a picture he'd cut out from a magazine I think. I thought that was really sweet seeing as we hadn't spoken in a WHILE.

I've been a lurker in this forum for a bit, now..but had to post because I am so excited! He had a guy draw a beautiful 8x10 portrait of he and I, for my birthday...just got it yesterday. It's amazing! He's also been sending b-day cards every week, for the last month and also sent his tank top, his bandanna and a mini watercolor painting (mountains, waterfall, river and sunrise...my fave scene) that another guy painted up for him, for me. Just wanted to share. :-)

This is old but my answer is new. My pal and friend from Middle school sent me two boxes of goodies yesterday for my birthday. A hand painted tee shirt, a hand panted necklace, tons of pillows with our names on them and at least 10 cards. The best birthday I've had since I turned 21 25 years ago.

My pal sent me a lovely book for my 30th Bday. It was a wonderful present. And he supports me by funny notes during hard times making my sorrow less important and shares my joy and happiness during good times making them go bigger.
I hope to be able to do the same for him but I feel sometimes speechless and unable to do so.

Sowa I'm certain that your friend appreciates every word that you write to him. Sometimes their needs are so great that we feel as though we are no help. But that isn't true. What they need the most is love and friendship.

OH and I celebrated our first anniversary in March, and my pal sent us an oil portrait of us and our son which he had another inmate do for us. He asked for lots of wedding pictures which obviously we sent him, and that was what he did for us. We are absolutely stunned as well as delighted that he went to so much trouble. We are picking it up from the framer tomorrow, took ages to get someone recommended, can't wait to see it.

Not everyone is a talented visual artist. Isn't the effort worthy of some consideration at least?

Paintings and a card. I got a large beautiful painting for my birthday of the pagan goddess and I've had some smaller beautiful paintings tucked away in some letters ^_^

Mostly just hand made cards and artwork. I have one pen pal who has crocheted me hats and things. That's pretty rare though. I didn't know inmates could actually have crochet and knitting needles but I guess they don't care at San Quentin.
