Metro Atlanta Day Reporting Center and Probation Office To Open This
Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for Friday, December 5th

Atlanta – The Georgia Department of Corrections announced today its
latest effort in building strong partnerships with local communities
for a safer Georgia, with the opening of the Metro Atlanta Day
Reporting Center and the Atlanta Southwest State Probation Office.
The two new programs are being established on the footprint of the
previous Day Reporting Center site on Sylvan Road in Southwest
Atlanta. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Friday, December 5
at 1:00pm.

The Metro Atlanta Day Reporting Center will be an intensive non-
residential drug and mental health treatment and restitution center.
Day Reporting Center's are designed to offer judge's viable, more
cost-effective options for low-level, drug and property crime
offenders. Centers are currently located in Gainesville, Columbus,
Rome, Morrow, Griffin, Macon, Tifton, Waycross and Athens, with
additional Centers scheduled to open in FY'09 and FY'10 in Northwest
Georgia, Savannah, Albany, Thomasville, Marietta, Augusta and DeKalb

"The Department of Corrections is committed to protecting the
citizens of Georgia and this is part of our continuing effort to do
that," said Commissioner James E. Donald. "Day Reporting Centers are
not only cost effective, but they have proven to help reduce the
recidivism rate."

Similarly, the Department announced the relocation of its Atlanta
Southwest State Probation Office to the same Sylvan Road
location. "The new location allowed us to relocate two of our leased
probation offices and save over $120,000 in annual lease money," said
Stan Cooper, GDC Director of Probations Operations. "By combining
these two offices, we are not only saving taxpayer dollars, but it
will allow us to provide more efficient and effective services,"
added Cooper.

In its final phase, the Department plans to open the new Atlanta
Community Impact Program on or about July 1, 2009. The program is
modeled after the Savannah Impact Program, an intensive
probation/parole supervision, juvenile outreach and offender
employment program. The program's mission is to protect the public
from high-risk offenders on parole/probation through a collaborative
community corrections program with State and local agencies. This is
accomplished by intense supervision, substance abuse counseling and
support programs to enhance the offender's reentry into the

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in
the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000
state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law
enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
