Default ISP housing questions

My boyfriend & I have been living with his parents for a few years and he was just sentenced to 3years flat and has applied for ISP. Now we’re concerned his parents house won’t be approved for ISP. His mother had a medical marijuana card and prescribed opioid pain meds for her cancer and his dad is a legal registered gun owner. There is also 8 of us living under one roof all family except me and his sister’s boyfriend. Not an ideal living situation I know but we are all struggling due to the pandemic. Can anyone give me more information on what is an automatic denial when they come check out the house? Also if I was to go get an apartment before he was accepted for ISP would they approve an apartment living situation? Does he have to be on the lease? I would like as much information possible.

I can't speak to NJ laws in particular. Generally speaking, if there are guns or drugs in the house, he won't be allowed to live there.

Drugs can sometimes have an exception due to medical need (as in this case), but if they are present, they'd need to be kept in a locked container where he couldn't have access to them. The guns would have to go live somewhere else if he were to have a chance at being able to live there.

Also, in general, as long as no one else in the house has a felony record, The Powers That Be prefer to put people in houses with their family because the family often can be more supportive.

So really, there's no way of knowing, except that the guns would definitely not be allowed and the medications would have to be locked up.
