Default Intro--bourret.brandon from Colorado

I did 2 years in the BOP for "Conspiracy to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act".

Specifically, I was one of two people who developed an app that was able to bypass security on the photo storing/sharing website Photobucket.com. That app was sold to the public. My actual aim was to provide a tool for concerned parents who wanted to check on their kids' online behavior, for concerned spouses/partners who suspected cheating, and for law enforcement and private investigators to gather clues or evidence in criminal or even civil cases.

In the end, what actually ended up happening was that a vast majority of the software buyers were only interested in searching private Photobucket accounts for nudity. There was an ugly aftermath to that. Nude pictures ended up being shared publicly, and some individuals ended up using those nude pictures to blackmail/extort people.

It was a very bad outcome. However, at the end of the day, the US Attorney agreed that my only victim was Photobucket.com itself because I was not directly responsible for what customers did with the software.

I had a Public Defender who, every time we met, pretty much did nothing but flip to the sentencing matrix of his Sentencing Guidelines manual. I was sentenced to 29 months. My co-defendant had enough money to afford a higher class of justice. He retained his own attorneys and managed a sweetheart deal where he actually ended up working for Photobucket.com. He was sentenced to probation.

I started my time close to home at FCI Englewood, and I was later sent to FCI Sandstone from where I was eventually released.

I paid my restitution, and I did my time. The Justice system got the pound of flesh it was after, so I consider my debt to society paid in full.

Moving forward, I am doing fine and am fully compliant with my probation. I keep a regular job, and my life is stable. As far as software development goes, I still dabble with little projects from time to time.

"so I consider my debt to society paid in full"

I've accepted this is never the case; being a felon is a life-long onus and I've learned to with it and to work around it

Something I wish I had known before I committed a crime.

OK, Brandon, Excuse my ignorance here but why on earth should you go to jail for other peoples actions? Granted you developed the app and granted you thought it was going to be used for good intentions and not bad, but to be imprisoned for the action of others makes no logical sense to me at all.

I remember this and your story here isn't true at all. Why not be truthful? This site doesn't judge. It is for support so really there isn't a reason to lie

patchouli,

Thanks, I too am a firm believer in three sides to a story.

His side her side and then there's the truth.

Thank you once again, much appreciated
