Two inmates plead no contest in death of third Panhandle prisoner

The Associated Press
6/10/03 11:20 AM

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) -- Two of six jail inmates charged with fatally beating another prisoner have pleaded no contest to lesser charges in deals with prosecutors that include possibly testifying against co-defendants.

Carlos King and Ronald Lawson also agreed Monday to five-year prison sentences. Prosecutors dropped second-degree murder charges against them in the Oct. 6 death of Chad Littles, 18, at the Bay County Jail Annex.

King, 31, pleaded no contest to aggravated assault and Lawson, 25, to felony battery.

Investigators said they and other inmates incorrectly thought Littles, who died of head injuries, was an informant.

King was accused of barring Littles' attempt to get away from his attackers, enabling them to trip him and then beat and kick him while he was down. Lawson's lawyer, Jonathan Dingus, said he kicked the victim only once in the lower back.

Inmates still facing second-degree murder charges are Nicholas Hulsey, 22; Malachi Najair, 25; Larry K. Burks, 18, and Jeremiah Samuel Hinsey, 20.

Littles' mother, Frances Hughes, is suing Corrections Corporation of America, the private company that runs the main and annex jails.

The suit alleges the Nashville, Tenn., company had to few guards on duty, failed to properly train them and lacked proper monitoring equipment. Company officials have denied the allegations.

Circuit Judge Don T. Sirmons said he would sentence King and Lawson after the other inmates are tried. Lawson will be sent to a jail outside the county for his own protection, but King will remain after telling Sirmons he felt safe.
