Default Voting Rights to be Restored

House passes bill to restore voting rights for some felons
Last Update: 9/23/2003 12:32:35 AM

(Montgomery-AP) -- The Alabama House has passed a bill that would restore voting rights to some convicted felons.

The House voted 47 to 42 to pass the bill. The bill also increases the size of the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles from three to seven members.

The expanded board will allow the state to parole an additional five thousand to six thousand prisoners to relieve prison overcrowding.

Governor Riley vetoed a bill allowing some felons to restore voting rights in June. But Riley is supporting the current bill, which establishes a processs in the Board of Pardons and Parole for investigating felons who want their rights restored.

Republicans had used delaying tactics against the bill last week. But Republican legislators agreed to let the bill come up for a vote Monday after it was amended to make felons who committed certain crimes not eligible to have voting rights restored.

I'm so happy for you and Wayne! How many days between the hearing and a go home date? I'm hoping if John makes Parole, that he'll be home for Christmas!
