This article talks about the proposed changes in DOC due to budget cuts, including the closing of several jails and Palmer Correctional Center in a year and a half. Nothing is set in stone yet, but these are interesting changes.

I would love to see how they plan on closing Palmer CC... Goose Creek is full, so they can't just shift them there.

Exactly, which leads me to believe they may eventually transfer Out-of-State again, although they say that is against current policy. They would have to get permission from the Legislature to do that.

Ultimately it will boil down to either building a new facility or transferring Out-of-State unless they have incredible success with the new SB64 programs and reduce recidivism by a large number.

In listening to the House Finance Corrections Subcommittee, I would like to note that they are talking about phasing out the minimum section of Palmer Correctional Facility and not the entire facility. They would like to place those minimum custody inmates on ankle monitoring. The newspaper article is somewhat misleading in this regard and I thought clarification would be helpful. =)
