Thumbs down DOJ walks back guidance discouraging use of private prisons

Quote:
"The Trump administration's decision to reverse course on existing policies designed to gradually end the use of private prisons is a major setback to restoring justice to our criminal justice system," Booker said in a statement."The Bureau of Prisons' own inspector general has found that privately-managed prisons housing federal inmates are less safe and less secure than federal prisons, and these facilities have seen repeated instances of civil rights violations. Attaching a profit motive to imprisonment undermines the cause of justice and fairness."

I love how they completely ignore fact and press ahead with statements that contradict reality.

"But, [Yates] said, the population is now on the decline, from 220,000 in 2013 to 195,000 in 2016."

"In a new memo dated February 21 and released for the first time on Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote that the Yates memo "changed long-standing policy and practice, and impaired the bureau's ability to meet the future needs of the federal correctional system." He directed the bureau to "return to its previous approach." "This will restore BOP's flexibility to manage the federal prison inmate population based on capacity needs," the Justice Department said in a statement Thursday"

You have to be a special kind of idiot to think this isn't an obvious move. You don't need more prisons to meet a decline in prison populations. Oh wait, unless you plan to fill them back up again. *sigh*

Follow the money:

Private prisons back Trump and could see big payoffs with new policies

WASHINGTON — Private prison companies, which stand to make big gains under President Trump’s tough new immigration orders, also have contributed big sums to pro-Trump groups, including the organization that raised a record $100 million for his inauguration last month.

GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest for-profit prison operators, donated $250,000 to support Trump’s inaugural festivities, Pablo Paez, the company’s vice president of corporate relations, told USA TODAY.

That’s on top of the $225,000 that a company subsidiary donated to a super PAC that spent some $22 million to help elect the real-estate magnate. Another prison operator, CoreCivic, gave $250,000 to support Trump’s inauguration, recently filed congressional reports show.

EDIT: They also plan on building more jails along the border (see above article/link)

Reverse the step-down on private prisons, increase prosecution for recreational marijuana. Welcome back to 1994.

"I do believe that you'll see greater enforcement," Spicer said, while adding the exact policy is "a question for the Department of Justice."
[...]
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was coy about his approach last month during his confirmation hearing.
"Using good judgment about how to handle these cases will be a responsibility of mine," he said. "I know it won't be an easy decision, but I will try to do my duty in a fair and just way."

Uh huh, yet LGBTQIA rights are best left to the states "They" say whatever they want with absolutely no consistency, no compassion, and no sense.

Guess it's harder to lock up the queer community than it is people who use marijuana. With 8 states having legal rec laws, this will get sticky.

The War on Drugs has been a total failure.....I cringe every time I hear about someone locked up for Possession of Pot or growing a handful of plants in their own backyard. I think the DOJ will have a huge mess on their hands trying to undo what several states have already legalized.

Just FYI Canada is in the process of legalizing pot possession as well - should happen this spring or fall. Yay!
