There are lot of men where I've visited with long hair. The only reasons I can think of to avoid it would be the cost of upkeep (haircare products) or, if you plan to fight. Long hair sucks in a fight. But if you have access to a good conditioner and plan to keep out of trouble and you are in a facility that does not dictate your hair style, then why not?

I knew lots of guys with long hair during my 6 years inside -- white and hispanic guys with ponytails, black guys with dreads, screaming gays, screaming homophobes, you name it.... I even grew my own hair to 6” below shoulder level before I got sick of it and cut it short again. Maintenance is a PITA and you can probably forget about access to quality hair care goods. The stuff available at commissary was junk and (at least in NY) the package room administration didn’t allow hair care stuff in from the outside. Long hair could be a problem in a fight, but hopefully fights won’t be a regular occurrence so that shouldn’t be an issue.
My ex has very long hair and as a Native American it was very important to him. He used to get hair products and he kept it braided. I don't he ever had any problems with it . Long hair is common in prison.

I too know a ton of men in prison with long hair. A guy I've known all my life (who does not stay out of trouble) continually grows his hair long and cuts it donating to locks of love and starting over. Some prisons will not allow long hair, however.
My bad, all...I started this thread as though we were only speaking about male inmates. The OP didn't stated a gender, so let's be open to the idea that they mean ANY inmate.
And in that case, I can say long hair is easier. My short hair days were fun, but hair cuts needed to happen frequently. In prison that can be costly depending on how they're run.
Many male inmates shave their head for this reason alone.

Some places shave it all off during intake and do a lice wash. I know for religious reason they can object. Maybe they allow them to grow it back afterwards. I'm not sure. Just a heads up in case.

My husband's hair is down to his mid-back. It was down to his waist at one point and then he cut it, he wanted it shoulder length but his hair is curly and it sprung up to chin length. He's been re-growing it for about 3 years.
