Wayne County inmates sentenced for prison riot

Three federal inmates were each sentenced to an additional two years behind bars Tuesday for their involvement in a riot involving two prison gangs last year at the U.S. Penitentiary-Canaan in Wayne County.

David Ayala-Romero, 49; Hector Avila-Reyes, 27, and Angel Fernandez-Rodriguez, 28 — all Mexican nationals — face likely deportation to Mexico after their sentences are complete, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus said.

At the request of their attorneys, U.S. District Judge James Munley said he would recommend to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons that the three men be allowed to serve their sentences at facilities in Arizona so they will be closer to their families.

“Do me a favor,” Mr. Avila-Reyes told the judge through an interpreter. “I haven’t seen my family in seven years.”

Approximately 120 inmates — about 70 members of the Paisa gang and about 50 members of the rival Latin Kings — clashed during the Nov. 12, 2007, riot in the gymnasium of the high-security federal prison in Canaan Township, Mr. Gurganus said. Prison authorities had to use sting grenades to quell the melee.
