Default Similar cases/sentences

Hi all!
I was wondering if anyone might know any reference sources (free??) where I can see examples of other federal cases wherein the defendant(s) faced similar charges to mine, and the sentences they received. I want to search a ata base for example and compare the various sentencing issues to my own case to get a rough idea of the peril I face. I knew how to do so when I worked for the feds, but have no access now.

Additionally, I wonder about any confidential sites where I could post my case and get "lawyerly" opinions about likely outcomes. I have helped many folks from a PO's perspective but sometimes (sigh) ya just need a lawyer.
Thanks all
Pam

Pam,

You could do some research on WestLaw online or Lexis, and there are other sites. You will get a general feeling of what type of sentences were handed out in cases with the charges you face. However, neither one of the above sites are free, but hopefully their cost have been brought down significantly since the last time I used them. You could also find WestLaw in hardbound editions in your local law library, that would be a better choice

The best place to start though is to look up what you have been charged under, the punishment range is listed as part of the code. Federal law is general easier to deal with and clearer in most aspects than state.

There is a site, but darn it, I cannot remember the name where you can post your situation and get advice, however, my advice to you, as a former paralegal, is to if you have not already, find a good criminal (federal) Attorney and listen to him.

I would really be uncomfortable with posting specific information about my criminal case on the internet, even now, so I strongly advise that you do not go that way.

If I can help you in learning the ropes around a law library, I will be happy too.

Patti

Default cases

The simplest thing is to go to the Federal Courthouse in your area and search the docket for cases. You can then call up files for any case and read through the entire history of the case. Of course the PSR is not going to be in the file. I have searched for sentencing outcomes for years and other than here, I have not found anything like you want.

Pam,

I am so glad you asked that question, I've wondered about that too. At www.ussc.gov you can get generic information in the federal statistics (I think that's the name) report. It doesn't go into the detail I want like comparing length of sentences, criminal history, offense level, etc. I also want to know if there is anyway to find out how many people are waiting to go into the federal prison system? Anyone know? I heard there were 60,000 in Texas alone and I find that hard to believe. Maybe 60,000 total?

I wouldn't go to a website called freeadvice.com. There are Sr. members on there that are VERY judgmental and nasty. I didn't post there, I just read thru many threads and it seemed as though the theme was to degrade people.
