I can see it going 2 different ways.

1) The inmates are more tech savy than the government; they will hack the tablets. They will figure out how to access the internet from the tablet or as piedpiper mentioned using a cell phone as a hot spot. Then DOC will try something to make them so limited they are useless as anything other than a music player. Imagine, the mail room that can't even pass on magazines, cds and paperbacks without being overly censored or taking months, having to deal with approving e-books or e-zines?

OR

2) They use tablets as an excuse to phase out in-person visits, which has happened in other states.

BUT

No matter what, it's another means to make money off of us. When ADOC got online payments in place and running for a few years, they eventually phased out sending money in any other form. We could send money orders, which were free from my bank. Then we couldn't and we pay $5 and up for each deposit to their accounts. Before Securepaks became the only method people used to send packages of products to inmates (before my time, but I know others have been around long enough to remember those times). I have seen the prices in other states for emails. I can see ADOC eventually saying no more cards, no more written letters or photographs; everything having to go through one of those 3 big companies that control the market.

Of course, those contracts seem to give ADOC a percentage off the top and we, the consumers, are footing the bills for those companies to operate and pay their CEOs huge bonuses with the fees that we are charged for using these services.

There are always trade offs in life. There might be some positives for the inmates somewhere in doing this; but for the friends and families, it will cost.

Article from Florence confirming the jail has them.
According to the list given before no other prison will receive them until November.

Default Highly skilled

Here's DOC's problem, once they begin issuing tablets, especially in places like Lewis... that genie of "control" is out of the bottle. There will be so many hacks and from so many directions, both from within and particularly from outside it will be impossible to regain control, short of shutting down their entire net. So the tablets will become expensive music players... at least for most, there will those that have the skill and external resources that successfully bypass the attempted efforts at control. Frankly speaking, I doubt that DOC has deep enough pockets to hire talent that's skilled enough to manage a net like that.

I have been emailing with someone in Florence Central who has a tablet for the past month. No issues thus far. Not holding my breathe it will stay problem free.

How long do you think it will someone on outside to get one of these tablets pop the case and insert a hotrod that's got all the web addresses, along with built in WIFI? Then it's just a matter of connecting with "right" DOC officer to provide the needed transport.

It's not like DOC is the pioneer when it comes to tablets. There are around 20 other states that have been using the tablets for years. So it's not a new concept where DOC is the guinea pig or having to have to figure out any possible complications/consequences.

They say they will be, but I haven't heard of anyone yet that's done one. I know the kiosks are up in the visit rooms though

I suspect it's already happened. Inmates probably already have the programs and directions on how to hack the tablets, provided on them through one of the contraband cell phones.
