Default Writing Florida Inmates / Writing a Sex Offender

Hey all- I've been considering writing to an inmate in Florida. This is not someone I knew previously. It's also not someone I found on a penpal website. I've just read about them online and feel like they're probably in need of a friend. (I've done the penpal thing before so I'm aware of potential pitfalls.)

There are two things that are new about this that I wanted to get some help with:
--I gather that prison penpals are a real no-no in Florida. Can I write him out of the blue on JPay without getting him in trouble? Do I have to pretend like I know him or is it okay to say "I heard about your case and thought you might need to talk so I wrote you"?

--This guy was convicted of a sex crime. Is there anything to watch out for here-- maybe this makes him more likely to have some other inmate go through his mail and steal my name/contact info? I don't know why, but I feel much less comfortable writing a sex offender than I do writing a convicted murderer or robber.

Inmates in Florida are not allowed to place pen pal ads, but they can write people. Even though that's not how you found this person, I would be really careful how you introduce yourself.

i know a lot of people who are penpals for those here in florida. they just dont allow inmates to advertise they are looking for inmates. you can write them on jpay without them getting in trouble for sure

No, I don't think being an SO makes it more likely for another inmate to steal your address. If you leave the charges out of the equation, the chance of your address getting stolen is the same as with any other offender, IMHO.

FYI: Its refreshing to hear someone mention writing an SO pen pal....usually its the other way around & the SO is the one charge many pen-pallers won't write. Thank You!
