Default A candle in the window/the blue light special

I think it was last year or maybe the year before that we held the blue light special...or the special blue light as I like to think of it.

So many people are already decorating for the holidays. I personally like mine to unfold softly, and have understated decorations. On the first Sunday of advent, (this sunday) I will put up a wreath I made from my grandparents' grape vines.

I have done this so many years that I forget when it started other than that my grandfather had died, someone was digging out the vineyard and I went and cut those vines to save.

When my son was in prison, I put up very scant decorations and decided that year to not use the same artificial tree that I had used for over 20 yrs...it was huge and I loaded it til you could not see the tree. My heart was not in it. I had seen the pencil trees and liked them but could not bring myself to buy one. One day my BF told me to look at them once more. I went to the shop and looked them all over. The shop owner told me to go downstairs to see more. As I walked along, I came to one with a big ribbon and a sign on it. It said "Pick your tree, love __ (BF's name)" He had already gone to the shop and pre paid for one. So that year I had that tree with only lights on it and a star on top. I did not unpack any old decorations. It brought me peace to see that soft glowing smaller tree.

In the window I placed an electric candle and changed the white bulb to a blue one to signify how blue I was over my son being in prison.
I decided that each year I will have that wreath in my window and two blue lit candles to always call to my mind the many inmates in prison for their holidays.

So many of you have joined me in the blue light remembrance, just a reminder to those who might want to join us in turning the night sky from black to a warm blue for the holidays! Be sure to tell your inmate that you are remembering them in that way. You could even tell them the night and time you are lighting the blue candle for the first time and tell them to think of you at that moment as well.

I have my blue candles ready to light up . I did put blue lights in the windows last year and went after Christmas and bought extra blue bulbs as to always make sure I would not be without. Since last year at this time....the nightlight in the boys' bathroom has always been blue. That way Jake is always there with his little brothers.

Oh jancy you brought this back up. Yes we did it for the past 2 years. I too will be simple and not put out all the holiday things I have. Christmas with my Blue light Special. I Loved the days when I was a young girl and we only got 1 present for Christmas if we were lucky, it didn't warp my mind!! We were always looking forward to going to church Christmas eve and getting our paper bag with a Orange, Apple, Nuts and peppermint candy. The good old days, so simple and popcorn pooped and strung own a string to put own our little scroney Tree we went to the woods to cut with Daddy. We looked forward to making color paper rings and Mom making homemade past to glue them together to adorn our little tree. Such a simple live filled with Love and we were happy. I think I will get the great grandchildren over to do this for our little tree this year. Memories they are something that can't be taken away. Making sure Jesus is included. Thank jancy

BO!
LMAOPMP at the "popcorn pooped" mispell. oh MY! laughter is good for the soul and releases endorphins.

I too made colored paper rings and pasted them with homemade paste (mix flour with a bit of water til it is sticky).
We made those at Thanksgiving to mark the days til Christmas. My parents got an orange or apple or nuts for christmas and that was it. ahh the simple life!

I like this idea.
I have not put up a tree in the time hubby has been in prison.
I did put up a few things, but very understated.
I really like the blue light special.
thinkin I may do that this yr.

I've still got mine from last Christmas ready to go into the windows. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to put out any of my other decorations (and I have alot) but those blue lights meant so much to me last year so they're definitely going out this weekend. Maybe I'll add a pink one in honor of the daughters too, Terry Lee.

I got rid of most of my decorations when i moved recently as i was just tired of putting them up to only cry becuase this or that was Megan's favorite thing to do or Porsche's favorite.
I have a couple of "special" things but no tree this year. Got rid of the Big tree the year the cat had kittens as i was tired of picking it up every day becuase the kittens kept climbing it.
I may hang thier stockings since i have a fireplace this year and a couple of small things. I have a beautiful Candle Dante made me one year he was locked up so i will put that out.
I love the blue light Idea and think i will have try to find some of those.

I do have the Santa suit for the dog though!!!! He doesnt like it much but i think it is too adorable!!!!

Blue Light Special here. I have always had a candle in the window for
Christmas every year since Matt has been away. This year it will be blue for all our sons in prison or jail. I'm going to try to find a pink one as well.
Thanks, whenever I pass someones house this Christmas and see a blue/pink candle I will wonder if it is for the same reason. Great Ideal.

Last year I had 3 blue lights in my window - 2 for my sons in prison and 1 for my stepson in the Army he's in Afganistan this year. I took 1 down when my son was released this year. But the other 2 were up all year and they are staying up until the boys come home. I pray all our sons & daughters remain safe and we remain sane through this holiday season (and always).

Default blue light special

Where have I been these past years that I didn't know about the blue light special!!!!!!!!!!!! I must have been in a 'blue funk'! This will be my last Christmas without my son, but I will keep doing this to remember all prisoners. When my son was in the Gulf War in the early 90's, I put a light on every night in my son's room. Thank you jancy for sharing this tradition.

Today I put up our Christmas tree as we still have 2 other sons in the house. I used all blue lights this year, along with the blue candles in the window. As I was decorating, I thought about and prayed for ALL our incarcerated loved ones. As I sit and look at it in the dark tonight.....its kind of comforting in its own way. I plan on taking a picture when its all finished and sending it to Jake so he too can see and feel what I am feeling right now. Its nice to feel a sense of calm this time of year.........
