Default The blue light special 💙

This goes back a long time now, but when my son was incarcerated, I could not bear the thought of Christmas with him inside. I really wanted the holiday season to disappear. I felt so bleak.

I decided to give up my traditional tree and changed to a different smaller pencil tree. I felt as blue as could be so I used blue lights.

I wrote to my son and told him about the blue light special Christmas. Then many others here joined me on the project and also decorated in blue. I had candles in the window in blue lights, too.

Although he has been out nearly six years now, I still always keep a blue nightlight burning to remind me of all the others who are inside, some for the rest of their lives.

Please feel free to join me in turning the world blue for the holidays in remembrance of all our loved ones who serve time.

I have blue lights every Christmas, and my husband loves the idea of me doing some special decoration because of him.

For many years, and for many reasons, I had a homemade window decoration that was near and dear to my heart: A huge peace sign, made out of 3 metal coat hangers and wrapped tightly with blue lights. 2 of the hangers made the circle, the 3rd hanger was used to made the inside lines of the peace sign. Alas, eventially the lights burned out and I never replaced them. How I miss that peace sign hanging in the window during the Cristmas season

There's just something soothing about blue lights and I love your idea of a blue Christmas!

Love the blue peace sign...cool! This time of year you can get blue lights at lowes and all over. You oughta make a new one and post a pic here!

Thanks, jancy. I always look forward to setting my blue light in the window. It's one of my favorite traditions for the holidays and one that I will continue even after my son comes home. I hope all the new parents try it and find the peace and comfort that it has always brought me.

Be sure to tell your child that you are doing this. Tell your son that we all do it in honor of those incarcerated. Give your son a day and time that you will first turn on the blue light and think of them. Ask them to think of you at that same time.

You can even tell them that every night at a certain time, the lights will go on for them so they too can think of you at that time.

Default I'm doing it too....

This will be my 3rd Christmas without my son, and the holiday will continue to be sad until the day he is sitting on our couch looking at the tree with us. When I saw your idea I bought a cute blue Christmas snowman welcome sign for my door and I am looking for a blue wreath to go with it. Thanks for a great idea.

I really like the blue light in the window idea and the peace symbol idea. I’m going to make a blue light peace symbol and put it in my window as a tribute to my lifer former bunkies who are still inside. Because of where I live and the way my LR faces, my LR window is visible for a long, LONG distance. Lots of people are going to see this one!

Wish I had seen this thread 4 Christmas' ago. This will be my last one without my only child, my son as he will be home on 2/12/15. No matter, I am going to buy something blue this year, let my son know, and each year I will put out that decoration for the holidays we have missed and for all the other families that are having a blue Christmas. I will be keeping my tree up this year until he returns home in February.

Hi, my youngest of two sons will be going to Elkton in Ohio shortly. He has been under Home Incarceration since his offense in June 2014. I can't bear the thought of not having him here. The blue Christmas lights will be my new holiday theme, but I intend to keep decorations to a minimum because I can't think of anything to celebrate while he's gone.
Please tell me how you got through this prison experience without having thoughts of suicide. Your child will be coming home in a matter of days now and I can't imagine how excited you must be.

Jancy,

Because of your post, I have had a small tree decorated with only blue lights in my room this year. I told my son about it, my "blue Christmas without him". This will be a hard holiday season to get through. Thank you for making it just a little easier, and more meaningful.

I like that. My son is home and has been for awhile but I too will be adding blue to my decorations not just for Chrisrmases I missed with him but for all the mothers missing Christmas with their loved ones. Blue is a calming light so I will home that it gives some measure of peace to those who see it.

Yep blue is calming. Like I said, I have a blue bulb in a nightlight in my bathroom year round. Every time I see it, I think of those in prison and their parents. My son knows of the blue light special and knows that prison not only changed him, but me as well.

I will do this today! Thanks for the wonderful suggestion

This is our second Xmas without our son - somehow this year is so much harder! Last year he was in county and we had hope that he would only be gone a couple of years.

Now, that he has been sentenced, its oh so real how many Xmas's he will miss.

Default Blue Light Special Project

Hello everyone,

I gave myself a project this year, to make a special "blue light" decoration in honor of my son, and everyone who is spending Christmas in prison.

It was therapeutic for me to paint and assemble, I now have this lantern in addition to my small tree with blue lights.

Hope you all are having the best holiday possible.

🌲Ok it's November! I've seen lights in the stores and actually bought two sets. I don't decorate til December but am thinking about it. Hopefully more of you will put a blue light out there this Christmas season to honor those incarcerated. Be sure to tell people why the light is blue. Also pass the word to your inmate to let them know that they are not forgotten. 💙

I've gotten several metal hangers with the intentions of making another large peace sign for my window I'd better get busy as I'm not mechanically inclined and can figure on screwing up a time or two before the project is complete

Just picked up some more blue bulbs today at Home Depot. Sometimes they're hard to find.

Default Blue Light Special

Will be facing the first of quite a few holidays without my son. I think this is a great idea and plan to implement it at my home. thanks for sharing such a simple, but meaningful way to share.

Aw, I see that this is your first post. I'm sorry to hear that your son will be serving time. I truly hope that you find the blue lights to be a comfort. Be sure to tell him that you will think of him every time you light them.
