Default youthful offenders

jst a question.. my son has youthful offender and is going in for 1 to 3 and it was criminal possision of a weapon in the 2nd.. i believe as a y/o he is open for shock anyone with answers to that as i read some where

because a youthful offender adjudication is not a judgment of conviction for a crime or any other offense person is eligible is that true????
