I think stuffing has always been one of those do as you do recipes.

Stuffing is no more than dried bread and whatever you choose to add. Spices, meat, veggies, they all have a place in stuffing. Really, what do you like in it?

My moms homemade stuffing was intense. First, she layed out bread slices for days...as did I, till I learned a new way, but NOT better mind you....
then she cooked the inards of the turkey slowly, a broth if you will, with black pepper and garlic.

And then she crushed the dried bread and poured the broth over it with the cooked....veggies, giblets...whatever you like.

Aint Stove top for sure...

I use the Bob Evans Sausage Stuffing. Have been for a couple of years. Family LOVES it. Its the first thing they attack and the first thing gone. I usually double(serve half and hide the other half ) the recipe so I have stuffing for the left overs.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 pound Bob Evans or Owens® Savory Sage or Original Recipe Sausage Roll
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 stalks celery, diced
  • 1 (14 ounce) package cubed stuffing
  • 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
DIRECTIONS
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble sausage. Add onion and celery and cook, stirring occasionally until sausage is brown. In a 9 by 13 inch casserole dish, place cubed stuffing. Add sausage mixture. Sprinkle with poultry seasoning. Pour broth and butter over the top and toss to combine. Cover. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.

My ma makes her stuffing with Jimmy Dean sausage, the onions... celery.. etc. She also puts some wild rice and waterchesnuts in it..... gives the stuffing a nice crunchy texture in contrast to the stuffing..MMmmm..
