There are no dumb ideas here, Winsgirl. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
With regards to logging out, I never do it myself and many others don't as well.
Believe it or not, it really doesn't have an affect on the system. When you quit clicking links or doing things your connection actually goes idle. The system keeps you logged in "technically" speaking so you don't loose your new posts but if your not doing anything, you put no load on the system.

Default My thoughts on paid memberships at PTO

You all have really come up with a lot of good ideas.

There are a few things I want to touch on relating to any paid membership system and then I will try and expand into the other areas I want to address that have been brought up..

Paid Memberships to Access PTO
Having paid-only access would cut off a lot of people from our community, whether it was because they just didn't want to pay a membership fee, or because they are financially unable. The one thing I don't want to see is someone in need not be able to find the assistance we have here so the all or none approach isn’t viable.

A 30 day trial membership sounds good but that would still leave a bunch of people in the dark, or just as easy, they could create new accounts to subvert that if it was that important to them. Yes, there are IP tracking measures but if it were to be enforced, it would take a LOT of time from the staff that is much better served elsewhere.

Possible Paid Membership Enhancements (Example)
I think that if we look into any type of paid memberships it should be to elevate member levels for those who donate or “subscribe” which would then give that person more features and access to areas of the site above the bare bones. Let's see... For instance.. And this is ONLY an example.. I’m just free wheeling right now so don’t take anything I am saying as solid. It might not be viable at all.

Regular Registered membership would include:
-Ability to View most Forums but maybe not all?
-Searches limited to 1 time per minute (reducing processor loads)
-Limited PM usage
-No Signatures
-No Custom Avatars (We’d create avatars they could choose from)
-No photo gallery access
-No Game Room Access
-No Live Chat access

Subscribed Member level 1: (Pay X $ per year… Maybe $12? $1/month?)
- Could make searches every 20 seconds
- Have a higher usage of PM’s above regular membership
- Have a custom siggy
- Have a custom avatar
- Photo Gallery access
- Live Chat access

Subscribed Member level 2: (Pay X $ per year.. Maybe $24? $2 / month?)
- Unlimited searches at whatever intervals
- Have an even higher usage of PM’s above level 1
- All other features included in level 1
- Access to Arcade

Thoughts?

Is there a way to go through the member lists and delete the inactive accounts, except for those that 'went in' and will be back to join us at a later date? I could help w/ that if it's decided.
We've moved inactive accounts up to a point to a closed status already, though that number is included in our total membership numbers... but this is not something that's really taking up server resources anyway. We can't totally delete them because too often we have to refer back to inactive accounts to investigate things sometimes... but again, I mean that's something that's not sucking up server resources really.

The biggest server resource drain actually is the "search" function and we will probably incorporate some changes with that which should relieve the server load considerably.

I think the enhancement idea is a good one. I have a question...do you need a credit card to pay through pay-pal or will they take an electronic check?

Sound like a great idea David!
The donate button at the bottom of the page is only for credit cards.
If you post an address I will put something in the mail next week and send more when it is decided what we are going to do.

I want a cookbook. I need a calendar. I wanna be a Level 2 member.
I think Florida can take Texas!

Does anyone need access to 2,000 PMs? But if I'm reading things right, that may not bog down our system at all, right David?

My daughters school does some fun fund raisers.....one of their best ideas (I think) are when they set a donation goal...when that goal is met,the Principal or a favored teacher has to agree to something.....say like sitting on the roof for the day or having chocolate sauce poured all over them!! I'd pay good money to see a picture of 'FedEx' and the 'Reds' and 'Blues' getting a 'pie in the face' or have to kiss a pig!!!

Personally, I like the idea of a graduated membership. I'd hate to see anyone left out, but it's just not right that David should shoulder all the costs for this and we reap all the benefits. Another fundraiser isn't a bad idea either.

I just sent you a donation.

An On Line Store would generate some profits.

What about getting a grant? Just an idea.

Here are my thoughts on paid membership....

If there was a paid membership when I joined I probably wouldn't be here. Although I would have no problem paying it now I think it could really hurt the future PTO community.

With different levels I think we would discriminate against those that truly can't afford it. I have become friends with a member that has to go the public library to log on. It just might make the people that don't have the money feel 'less than' because they can't have 'full membership' I believe we should all stay equal.

If PTO collects membership fees would you still be able to stay non-profit?

I think that having a fundraiser with a goal set (I think 24jf said it) that it would really help. If the word gets out that PTO really needs the money and why I think you will raise more than enough money faster than you think!

Just my opinion....

David, you beat me to it

Another site I go to has free & paid memberships also (not prison related but just as big as this site). You can read and post anything you want for free except for a couple extra forums, limited PM access, & no graphics.

With the paid membership of $12 a year (or $6 every 6 months), you get unlimited PMs, personalized avatars, access to the extra forums, etc.

We could do a form of that here, like you said. Paid members could use the arcade, unlimited PMs, extra forums maybe, custom graphics, etc.

I agree about some not being able to afford it. We've handled that there too. We have what's called "adopt a poster". Each account has the option to buy someone else a membership. It's another way for people to donate and feel like they helped. So this way you could be a member and pay for someone else to be a member too. It's a little easier than asking someone to blindly donate during the official fundraiser offtimes.

Then you could still do quarterly $2 fundraisers on top of that. And of course, I've felt that the PTO store needs to get going too. Anything from $2 keychains or see through change bags all the way up to $30 plus size sweatshirts (for me of course ).

We don't have 40,000 members who post everyday or would ever pay just to read, but you have a bunch of willing members who want to help if we have the options easily available.
