Default Compassionate Release Process

This is my first post here, though I have lurked quite a bit since my father was first arrested by the FBI and it became clear he was most likely going to be a guest of the BOP. I have tried researching the answers, but haven't had much luck so was hoping I'd find some info here.

My father was diagnosed with advanced cholangiocarcinoma at the end of January, and given approximately a year left to live. We applied for Compassionate Release and at first it was denied by the Warden, who apparently glanced over it and thought it was a request for clemency after less than 3 years of a 10 year sentence. The guard who submitted the paperwork met with the Warden to ask why it was denied, and he realized his mistake and approved it.

I know it still has several steps to go, and that the process is ridiculously long and full of red tape. My mom received a call from a Parole/Probation Officer, who is coming to their house tomorrow to look it over. Does anyone know where in the process this visit falls? We are trying to determine how far it has made it (which level it is at), and there doesn't seem to be a good way to gauge that. Any info/tips/advice?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Prison Talk. I'm sorry for your Dad's prognosis, and I hope he is able to obtain a compassionate release and you get answers from someone who has successfully received one.

Here is the most recent (2015) change to the bop's Compassionate release program statement.
https://www.bop.gov/policy/progstat/5050_049_CN-1.pdf

a google search for "federal bureau of prisons compassionate release" has links to articles, including one by Families Against Mandatory Minimums, FAMM, that may also be helpful. I hope he can come home soon.
