Here's the article from the Merced Sun Star. No inmate names, but the injured prisoner is already back at the prison from the hospital.

The phones have been down for two weeks, I've tried calling everyday since 5/22. Even went in to ask some questions and they had no idea when the phones would be working again. Grrr.

Welcome to Prison Talk and to the federal forums. I hope you receive an answer from someone who knows about the lockdown.

Since the inmates aren't able to communicate with anyone outside of the prison except for letters, and the prison staff will almost never provide answers, it isn't easy to learn what is happening.

That was going to be my question. When they're on lockdown, do they still receive letters, and they're able to send them? I had books delivered over week ago and got a letter mailed Thursday asking for the books I already sent. I was expecting a letter today and nothing came, I wondered if it was because of the lockdown.

Mail often slows down during lockdowns, both ways. Inmates usually can't shop at the commissary either, so not having enough stamps and stationary on hand can also be a problem.

Thanks for the info! I got 4 letters today, one mentioning the incident that happened Friday. I get his letters fairly quickly, they went out Monday and I received them today. Good news is my visitation application was approved, bad news is I can't visit because of the lockdown. Grrr seriously one roadblock after another. Hopefully it gets lifted soon.

Default *frustrated noises*

Hey everyone, I've been a bit of a lurker, but I joined and activated so I can answer... there was a fight that broke out between three inmates (two vs one) which sent the prison into lockdown Friday June 1 evening local time. Prison staff isolated and contained the situation and the one prisoner was treated at a local hospital and has since been returned to Atwater. Apparently they are lockdown pending an FBI investigation.
This is my first lockdown with my fella, so I'm not sure how long they typically last if a CO was not harmed or the public was not in danger. Can anyone give any input as to how long we can expect this lockdown to last? I was planning on visiting my fella this summer, but it's an international trip (flight, hotel car rental not to mention time off work...) and looking at USP Atwater history they seem to lockdown all the time...

Welcome to Prison Talk.

Lockdowns last for as long as the warden decides, so it is impossible to predict the length of this one. Since it was for a fairly common event (the fight, not the hospital part) it will probably end quickly. If it is gang related, the staff will be more concerned about what might happen when the lockdown is lifted.

Here's hoping it won't last too much longer. I don't know if it was gang related or not though. If it was gang related, will it last longer than if it wasn't?

It will still be up to the warden to decide when it will end, so only they know the answer. The added concern about gang fights is having it restart for payback or retaliation over the last fight.

Being new to the bop prison nightmare is difficult for everyone, so don't be afraid to ask your questions here. The bop's practices are usually counter-intuitive, with a very steep learning curve too.

You aren't alone! So many of us are dealing with this together, these forums have already helped me so much!

I just received another letter from my bf. He mentioned a guard said it would probably be lifted by Tuesday next week, although there is no way to be sure. Let's hope so, I'm praying I'll be able to visit next Saturday. He said they don't get commissary while on lockdown either and he was almost out of stamps. I really hope it ends soon, so sad that everyone gets punished for what a couple of idiots do!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate that and can see me becoming a regular here

Oh thats such good news!! Im really hoping its true and the lockdown will end in a few days! Im soooo hoping you get to see your man next weekend too. Youre rught, its one of the things that I find super frustrating.. that everyone gets screwed over because of the actions of literally a few people. I understand the logic but it is SO frustrating. Im so hoping this ends soon and everything can go back to the usual. Is it just me or is mail a lot slower too?
