Default AUSP Thomson & Adjacent camp - Looking for Information

I am trying to get information on the Federal prison in Thompson, Illinois. It is my understanding that it is presently a Federal prison camp, but will ultimately be converted into a Federal maximum security facility. Does anyone know when this will occur and/or why it has not yet occurred? Does anyone have any other information about Thompson?

Thanks.

Welcome to Prison Talk and to the federal forums. The supermax prison at Thomson (which will double the current capacity of Colorado's supermax) is set to open later in 2017. There has been talk about moving all of the inmates from the CIA's dark site prison at Guantanamo, Cuba to Thompson.

The minimum security inmates who have been designated to the camp will help to get the USP up and running. Here is a 2015 Clinton Herald article about it, and a google search will have more recent ones too.

Thomson is an administrative security U.S. penitentiary (AUSP) with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.

Is the AUSP open and fully functional? Here is an article form Oct. 2016 that provides some info:

Thomson prison expected to be fully operational in 2017

THOMSON — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said a western Illinois federal prison will be fully operational starting late next year.
Durbin, a Springfield Democrat, visited Thomson Administrative U.S. Penitentiary on Tuesday. He said progress is moving forward on the facility but that much work remains to be done.

As a federal maximum-security prison, Thomson is expected to house up to 2,800 federal inmates from around the country and create about 100 more jobs.
“I’m so happy to report that out of the 214 current employees at this facility, paid employees and salaried employees, with a payroll income of about $22 million a year, that over half of them are from the local area,” said the senator.

Here is the BOP webpage for that facility:

Any more information on Thomson? What's the camp like? I did a satellite view and looks like there's a fence? Workout facilities? Any other info?

Here's the bop AUSP Thomson web page which includes mailing addresses, etc.
https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/tom/

To locate all the archived PTO posts about the prison, google "thomson prison talk".

Thank you, but the only address it list is the address for the camp. I guess I can wait til I get a letter. Was just hoping to write him before then.

The bop doesn't even list the A&O handbook (prisoner's rules) for the supermax. Even the original supermax in Florence, Colorado shows both the mailing address for prisoner's mail, plus their A&O handbook. Thomson must be Guantanamo Bay east.

Glad to help! I have found out that you can send to both PO Box's and the inmate will get mail. Avoid sending post cards & colored paper. A few items have been sent back to me.

Here is the information my family sent on Thompson. Maybe it will help those curious on Thompson SMU.

It has 8 units A-H. Each unit has 4 ranges, each range holds 100 people. Each range has its own law library, 7 showers, and its own dog kennel rec area. No showers in cell, just a metal sink/toilet. The cells were originally built to hold one inmate so the bottom bunk is concrete slab. When BOP bought the prison they they installed the top bunk which is metal. Theres windows but they are fogged so you cannot see out. The toilet flush button, the hot/cold button and shower buttons are all censor touch activated. Shower days depend on what side of the range you live on. One side top/bottom goes Monday, Wednesday, Friday the other side goes Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. No showers Sunday. There is also a timer on the toilet flushes. You get 3 flushes every 30 minutes. You do not go to other ranges for yard. A, B, C units are GP, D unit is receiving and release, E unit is the SHU or AdSEG for the main line F, G, H are SMU units. However, only F unit for SMU is up and fully functioning. Ranges 1, 2, 3 have been filled up range 4 is still vacant or has low number of inmates in it. The program is said to be 9 to 13 months But they can hold you put to 24 months before stamping you a SMU failure. Level 1 is said to be 6 to 8 months but here they say 9 months. Level 2, 3, 4 are 2 months but they are taking 5 months on 2 and 3. So it is hard to gauge. It is barely getting its wheels spinning they are just ready for level 1 and 2 right now. Level 1 is 2 phone calls a month, level 2 is 4 phone calls a month and level 3 is 15 to home calls a month. Everyone there now is level 1 for the most part but a good amount are getting ready to turn level 2 if Admin goes by the 6 months standard. All you receive from your personal property is a little hygiene but if you use it up you can complete an inmate request and get more. you get your religious materials except your medallion and neckless. they are not allowing them like Lewisburg did. You can have your legal work as long as it doesn’t exceed a certain amount of space, 25 pictures only. No personal clothes, no watches, no hats, no shoes, all these items go in your personal property thats stored in storage in the unit. No personal radios or mp3 players allowed. AU SMU inmates are issued an old style green MP3 player with only FM capability. There is a charger in every cell installed in the wall above the sink. So an inmate can charge whenever they want. Showers/rec are in the morning. Commisary is alright. You can spend 50.00 every two weeks. you can get books, magazines, newspapers but there tying to control the stacking up or stock piling so all books/mags go to a inmates storage property first. The CO gives you a property slip in the mail letting you know you got books/mags you have to write the property officer to ask for them and wait for him to bring them. It is a one for one exchange. The newspapers come regular with the mail. You can only have 3 paper back books at a time. NO HARD BACKS there is no outside recreation in the cages on Saturday or Sundays. There are NO razors. Every two weeks you get to shave your head/face with hair clippers. they do sell magic shave and nair hair remover on commissary. They work ok, not like a razor though. The food is great, hot, cooked, seasoned right and as of now plentiful. No complaints. The staff are civil for the most part you get what you get coming from where some have been it isn’t that bad. Medical is alright, they do not have a Doctor. So one from the streets has to come in when necessary. Every unit has its own medical room. Theres no mirrors in the cells only the showers but you can buy cardboard or paper mirrors. Right now its 4 people to a recreation cage. You, your celly, and whatever other cell they put with you, it changes daily LOL. You change cells every 2 weeks. Everything issued is all orange with your last name, register number on it. 3 pairs of pants, 3 t-shirts, 3 boxers, 3 socks, 2 pairs od basketball style shorts, 1 beanie, 1 pair of shower shoes, 1 pair of shoes, 1 cup, 2 sheets, 1 blanket. The mattress has a built in pillow, you get a big white property bag, and a red laundry bag. Laundry is Monday (turn in Sunday night) and Thursday (turn in Wednesday night). They exchange sheets every Sunday when they collect laundry.
