I'm passing this to you all so you all will know. I have gotten a phone call from someone that knows my LO and my LO is currently in the shu since he got into more trouble but he's doing ok. He will be sent to another prison but I'm not sure which prison he will be at. I will keep this forum open and I will update you all as I get more updates. I'm not sure if I should send him a letter now or wait until he gets to the other prison. Last time he got sent to another prison the letter that I sent to the prison where he was at came back to me returned with an incorrect register name/number stamp on there with the yellow label on it.

Best of luck to you and your LO. I would just write the letter. If it comes back then you can always send it again.

Write to him often. If he is moved to a different prison, they will forward his mail for one month. If the mail room sends it back to you, mail it again.

He may or may not be told where he is being sent (until he gets there anyway). You will be able to follow his progress on the bop inmate locator.

I followed it and he's still at the prison for right now. I know there are other USP's in the state where he's at. Do they move them in the USP in the same state or different state and how does that work?

There is no way to know where he will be transferred. The bop has "keep away lists" for many prisoners so they don't end up putting problems together in the same prison or cell. I can't say how accurate they are, since each prisoner is asked if there are others who should be avoided (like police officer prisoners being asked if there are folks who carry a grudge against them), but they do ask.

Distance from anything or anyone is never a big issue with the bop designation office, I went past a bunch of federal prisons before finally arriving at mine, which was 1200+ miles from home.

Oh ok. Someone told me that he will be at the prison where he's currently at for 3-4 months before they move him. Do they just call out their names when it's time for them to be moved?

A CO will tell him to "pack out", usually on the day he is leaving. He will then take all of his property to Receiving & Discharge (R&D) so it can be shipped to his new prison. He may arrive there and wait for weeks before his property is returned to him.

He will then either stay in R&D until it is time to start his journey, or he will be told when to return.

Some, but not all counselors will tell the inmate where they are going, but not when, because of security concerns.

Oh ok. I just sent some pictures to him since he's still at the prison for right now. Will he still receive those or will they hold it for him?

The bop mailroom will forward his mail for up to one month. If not, the letter is supposed to be returned to sender.

Oh ok. If the pictures gets to the prison before he leaves since he's still in the shu, will they give it to him or will they put it with his property?

Mail is delivered to SHU inmates. If he receives the photos before he is moved, they will go into his property to be sent to his new prison. If he has already left, the letter will either be forwarded to him at the next prison, or returned to you. The mailroom will decide which.

So, they will deliver mail to SHU inmates? I sent him a letter today. What happens when they get to their new prison?

The new prison will decide if he will live in their SHU, or be assigned to general population. Since his move is because of "trouble" at his current prison, he may go from SHU to SHU.

Either way, he will receive your mail. Once he shows up at a new location on the bop inmate locator, write to him there.
