Improvements at Kentucky Prison where Vermont Prisoners are Being Held

Montpelier, Vermont - December 24, 2004

Progress is being made at Kentucky Prison where Vermont prisoners are being held. That's the view of the state's corrections commissioner.

Stephen Gold testified this week before a special legislative panel. Authorities say 16 Vermont inmates took part an uprising in September burning and vandalizing the prison. Rioters blamed poor conditions at the prison. Vermont sought changes under its contract with the Kentucky operators.

"I think the new warden they have there as we heard from inmates in our conversation..is doing a good job moving forward and recognizing there was some pretty significant problems. I would not say I am satisfied at this point that they have done everything they need to do. They report to me and they are making progress," said Steve Gold, Vermont Corrections Commissioner.

Sixteen Vermont inmates face charges in Kentucky for their alleged involvement in the uprising. After the riot some prisoners were moved to another prison in Arizona.
