Default TOASTMASTERS! A Way To Get A Voice...

I know that there are Toastmasters prison clubs set up in different states. Hawaii has approximately 6-7 prison clubs set up, with Toastmasters members sponsoring or mentoring inmates in the facility. On the island of O'ahu alone there are 3 clubs to date: one in the Women's facility on the Windward side, one in the men's medium facility (Halawa) and the last one in the men's minimum facility (Waiawa).

Toastmasters clubs are such an important (but unseen and underappreciated) function in society. For a lot of people who have a difficult time expressing themselves, Toastmasters gives them the tools so that they may have a voice and a way to productively express themselves. Toastmasters teaches people to do "off the cuff" extenporaneous speaking, or speaking on your feet.

For more information on clubs in your loved one's facility or in Toastmasters in general, please PM me for their e-mail address (I don't think we're supposed to post e-mail addresses on these threads so that would be the best way). Thank you.

Hello MsAloha1018, My husband was in toastmasters when he was free and plans on going back when he gets home. He has had his own business before, and will start another when he gets home. This helps him tramendously with his speech and helps when talking in front of crowds, etc. I didn't know you could join when in prison. My hubby is in Illinois now, are there any around this area that is available at such a time?

That is awesome!
We have Toastmasters here at my work and people who are involved really enjoy it. I think this is a great program for prisons to have!

I was in Toastmaster's until my scedule changed recently and was interested in starting one in the local prison someday. There is a divison that doesn't involve fees and memberships.

I was in Toastmasters while inside and it was a very good experience. I may try to join again. I think about it often. I wonder, How different it is on the street. I notice many meetings are very early in the morning.

Toastmasters is another word for public speaking. I am taking a public speaking class and I have heard it defined in the same breath as Toastmasters.

At first, I was nervous, but I am getting into it. I am taking the class to help me speak my mind. If any one is considering taking the class I would encourage you to. You will not regret it.

Oh wow, this is a GREAT idea! I know a handful of people who tell me they have really benefitted from joining Toastmasters, because it helped them gain confidence, improve their language skills, learn to express themselves in healthy, productive ways, etc. One woman who struggled with shyness all her life said that it wasn't as scary as she thought it was going to be, because everyone was there for the same reason, and they were all very supportive.

Truly an excellent suggestion, Ms. Aloha!

I have heard about this program. I am impressed. This is a great program for all prisons to have. It gives the inmates pride and self confidence.

Hello, if you do a google for toastmasters there is a link that shows every city in every state that they are in. I would imagine Waseca has one as they are about the same size as we are here.
Toastmasters is where a group of people get together and help each other learn how to become good public speakers. You practice speaches with their supervision.
It's a great way to overcome shyness!

Toastmasters is practically everywhere, provided you can find them. I know several people who have joined hoping to deal with self-consciousness and discomfort in dealing with the public. It helped them all a great deal.

Agreed, to all of the above, Toastmasters helps you speak your mind, be powerful in business situations and learn how to tap into your emotions. Often we think and feel things very clearly, but learning how to speak them clearly is not always so easy. Toastmasters takes the fear out, helps us formulate the words and provides an environment for practice.

Hi all:

For those experienced Toastmaster members, I may need some help. We are starting a Toastmasters program at our facility here in Florida as part of our re-entry program and I have no clue what toastmasters is about. My old boss is the impetus behind it and says with my background of Youth Legislature in high school (many, many, light years ago) I would make a good organizer.
Any tips for me? My facility is all male, housing everything except death row inmates, we have ages 17 -????.

Default I stand Corrected

Clarification:
The program we are starting is called a Gavel Club (I think I got it right) but it brached out from Toastmaster's for use in the prison environment as a way to teach other how to deal effectively with confrontation of opinions, public speaking, etc.
Still seeking input

I am self surrendering on August 23, 2010 probably to FCI Phoenix or Dublin, CA...most likely in the western region. My hope is to start a Gavel Club. I have been a Toastmaster for about 1 1/2 years, and I can tell you it has been one of the most positive and supportive things I have ever done. I was told by Toastmasters International that the Warden in each facility has to approve the club. Once I get to wherever I am going, I will check with the Warden to see if I can do this. I hope others will do the same.
