Default Snail Mail or Jpay-email

I enjoy handwritten letters because they seem more personal than cyber mail.

However, many inmates prefer Jpay. I've actually lost pen-pals because I refused to do Jpay.

Why do some Penpals prefer Jpay over snail mail?

Someone told me that inmates are charged per minute to read and write with Jpay, so the emails are rushed. Also, they expect their penpal (Me) to give them a monthly allowance to afford Jpay.

Is there any truth to this?

Why do you care? JPay is faster, instant gratification and a fast turnaround... if you don't pay for it then don't care... in this society electronic messaging is a means of communication and I'm glad most prisons have it...
You can still write a regular letter via snail-mail... Why make it a go-/no-go thing?

Jpay is faster. Snail mail can take days, weeks depending on location writing to.
No monthly allowance needed in jpay. Just send prepaid stamps (or dont) if want a faster reply. Prepaid replys go to you only and can't be used for others.
Where my penpals are, they have 15 minutes on the kiosk to sync tablets that send and receive the jpay. Lines can be extra long at certain times of the day.
Snail mail have to be mailed from certain point on compound that is far from the units. With the excessive snow and freezing temps, many not wanting to be out in it.
Good luck to you, hopefully you find some penpals that like writing snail mail as much as you do.

I totally get why you prefer snail mail. Its good to have that letter arrive in the mail. Its good not to have to read on a screen. Letter writing is a dying art.
However in this modern age of technology communication is much quicker and a lotof people want those quick comms.
As others have said see if you can find a pen pal who enjoys letter writing.
I am sure there are some, not all states have tablets.

I prefer snail mail, but since it takes so long from Italy (2-3 weeks), I've begun using Jmail and only recently Jpay.
My PPs prefer it that way 'cause it's faster.
But I still occasionally still drop a letter or a card by snail mail (old habits are hard to die!)

Inmate where I work, pay for the amount time they spend on Jpay.

Not sure how much it is, but I do know they pay.
