Unhappy Can U Help???? (want to get my son transferred to a yd. in CA that has a sweatlodge)

Just wanted to know if anyone can possibly guide me in the right direction or where to start?? How or what direction I want to get my Son transferred to a California Dept of Corrections Facility to a California Dept of Corrections Facility, That has a Sweat Lodge for Native American Inmates? The current Facility does not have one. So he is being denied his Religious Ceromonys. The current Facility says they will not transfer him once he is there he is there to stay?? But there are several other Facilities that can accomedate his needs. The Counselor also said he would only be transferred if it was a Medical Need. Doesn/t she realize these practices are a Healing and Rehabilitation in itself?? I know there must be something in the California Rules that might help us Can anyone give anything to help us????

The department of corrections, has no empathy when it comes to religion, most especially when you are not talking abbout religions that are not part of the dominant culture. There is a possibility of bringing a spiritual advisor for your son or a native circle to the prison. One would need to talk to the director of religion, a chaplain or perhaps the director iof programs.
Be prepared to help find one, It took me 2 years to find a spiritual advisor in a midwestern state...You need to be willing to do the footwork, GAWD knows the priison won't.

Below is a link to the White Bison organization.
http://www.whitebison.org/firestarter_list/index.htm
On this particular page you will find a list of fire stater groups, perhaps there is one near to the prison that would be willing to send someone to the prison. contacting local American Indian organizations and tribes may help,,,AIM may also be in option

Are there any state legislators that are involved in Native Americans Affairs you could contact? Maybe its time the facility he is in has allows a sweat ceremony.

hello there. my husband is at wasco state prison and they allow them to have their sweat ceremonies and drum and sing and practice their religion. they also get a supply of beads and other stuff like that i think like once a month. maybe you can look into that place. even during lockdowns, they keep the natives separated and still allow them their time. have a great day! dolores

loving my indian warrior till my last breath

Default yards with sweatlodge

Well, my husband may be able to help ya out. He's been out for almost 11yrs now, but was one of the many who were instrumental in bringing lodges into the prisons in the 1980's. Over his 20yrs of incarceration, he was at Folsom, Quentin, Chino, Soledad, Tracy, Donovan, and too many county jails to name. Let me know if you'd like to holler at him for some advice. ~kim

I, too have a problem. My son was transferred to a prison up north and they won't let him have his drums or his spirit box.The CO past his drums to the other CO's and put his hands all over his rocks and other spirit items. There is no spirit leader there. HELP!!! I don't know what to do. Lambchop

Default A nation wide problem

This is unfortunately a nation wide problem and it seems that a transfer always creates trouble for the inmate one way or the other. At times they get the items back after some time other times not. The inmates security classification also have some influence on things too. Where is he incarcerated? The first thing you may want to consider is contacting the units chaplain asking for assistance in getting a spiritual advisor and as well the items needed for his practise. Many times they are more than willing to help.
