Question $18.12 for a 15 minute call!? Please help with suggestions

So my babe is in Piedmont Regional Jail (434) and I have a Washington, DC (202) phone number. A 15 minute call cost us $18.12. Does anybody has any suggestions of what I can do to get a number in this area? I was gonna get a Cricket phone with a number in that area but my local Cricket said they counldnt do it because it was out of their area

Yes we use offender connect too you add $ to his phone account on there and they take out a dollar per call for us but you pay cheap jail call 17.99 for 300 minutes (5 cents a minute and 2.99 for the number its self) its all prepay too u can always up plan or add more $ to account but he has to have $ on his phone account on offender connect for it to work.

Default UPDATE! I'm using GV!

So I decided to try GV and it works so well so far....It reduced my calls from $18.12 to $3.03.....I'm so much happier now about the calling situation.

Default free call forwarding from virtual local number

I'm new to this, my fiance caught a charge for something she didn't do because of her record and has to do a year in IDOC. I have been looking for a way to make the phone calls cheaper but my cell phone provider did not have any numbers avalible that are local to the prison.

I can't belive I have been looking all over these forums and not found the best solution possible that I stumbeld upon.

Get a Gmail acount, it's free. Look up Googe Voice, Log in,
Click I want a new number at the bottom left if the screen.
Type in the area code of the mailing address for the prison.
select a local number. enter the pin number you want.
enter your current phone number. your almost done.

Go to the settings tab and turn off call screenning.
Save.

You dial the new number and it rings straight through to your phone!
Its free for all incoming and outgoing calls in the united states!
If he or she gets moved you can get a new number with a few clicks!

Let me know if this helps you. I'm not one to sit back and feel sorry for myself, theres always a way to do something if you sit and think long enough. Stay productive and take care of yourself and you'll have a much better chance of finding ways to make a terrible situation better.

I wish this info would be posted somewhere that is easy to find. It would have saved me a lot of headache. I just now realized that you had already found the same solution.

Wow.. that's crazy.
We pay like 1.28 to start the call and like 10 cents a minute. We would NOTTTT be talking on the phone for 18.00 a call!
I couldn't imagine..

I always warn people to check with the facility first about cell phones and/or companies that reduce costs. In some places (like Texas) it is against the rules for an inmate to call a cell phone. It is also against the rules to use “third party” services like Google Voice or ConsCallHome. Those services forward calls to another line. The facility will find out; they have the technology. The inmate will get written up for a case, and you will lose all phone privileges and visitation when the facility finds out! I think it's better to be safe than sorry, so please check with the facility!
